๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ Highland Justice by @heatherdmccollum ~ Review
๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ Holy. Smokes. ๐Ÿ”ฅ As soon as I finished this one, I downloaded the preceding two books in the Sons of Sinclair series. Thatโ€™s how much I didnโ€™t want to leave the world @heatherdmccollum built!
๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ The Sons of Sinclair were raised to be the four horsemen of the apocalypse, with Gideon as the Horseman of Justice.
๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ Naturally, our heroine is a thief. Cait runs a home for orphans, and she would do anything to keep them safe and fedโ€ฆincluding steal from Gideon.
๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ I couldnโ€™t put this book down, especially from seeing their relationship develop- Gideon shows Cait that she isnโ€™t too cold for love, and Cait teaches Gideon how to relate to his people, and more importantly, that final judgement may be too much for just one man.
๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ This book has it all: spicy scenes so hot that beds are broken ๐Ÿฅต, treason against the crown, an epic love story, and scenes that brought me to tears.
๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ I give this one โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ. This is the third in the Sons of Sinclair series, but you donโ€™t have to read in order to easily follow along.
๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ I am waiting with bated breath for Basโ€™s story, the Horseman of Death! ๐Ÿ’€ Seriously, itโ€™s going to be incredible.
๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ The greatest of thanks to @entangled_publishing and @tlcbooktours for bringing this series into my life โ™ฅ๏ธ
๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ QOTD: Whatโ€™s the last book you read that you liked so much you picked up everything else in the series? (My tbr is crying right now ๐Ÿ˜‚ BUT SO WORTH IT)
California is home to all kinds of people and ever California is home to all kinds of people and every kind of story. I didnโ€™t grow up here, but Iโ€™ve lived here my entire adult life, and have started collecting books with California settings. This short story collection fits right in. Itโ€™s out now - I hope youโ€™ll check it out โ˜€๏ธ
Hereโ€™s the synopsis:
In present-day Southern California, a diverse group of characters seeks the fulfillment and connection this sunny state has always promised. They come with hopes for a better lifestyle, for a change of perspective, or for the dry, mild West Coast weather. A couple moves to Palm Desert from New York for the arid, warm climate a doctor prescribes and they manage both illness and homesickness. The woman makes an unlikely friend in a young albino boy who teaches her a harsh lesson about the margin for cruelty that resides in us all. A young Mexican woman migrates to California and marries an American manโ€”only to be deserted. A young man is disqualified from the Naval Aeronautical program and returns to his sisterโ€™s home, where he struggles with his identity and sexuality. After years of estrangement, a teenage girl travels to California from New York to spend the summer with her father. Between each of the thirteen stories in this collection are interspersed several โ€œsnapshotโ€ storiesโ€”poetic pausesโ€”that blend a set of images into an artistic visual unit, much like a brief cinematic experience. Every character in this collection is distinct from the next, but all of their stories unfold under the glare of the same Southern California sunโ€”a western desert light so clear and unfiltered that it reveals everything. #allsfairandothercaliforniastories #californiabooks #lindafeyder #storycollection

Thank You, Mama is a fun new childrenโ€™s book that I guarantee will make you and your child hungry! I am so excited to add this new book to our shelves. My almost 3 year old is a very picky eater (and her โ€œsafeโ€ foods are also limited due to food allergies) so it is hard to get her to try new foods and expand her palate. Iโ€™m hoping this book will help! I also love that the book focuses on gratitude, Vietnamese cuisine, and that mealtime is a special time to be together as a family!
โ €
Synopsis:
โ€œTikTok and viral video star Grey (@greyandmama, 6M followers)ย says โ€œThank you, Mama!โ€ to healthy foods in this picture book that teaches gratitude, manners, and the joy of sharing meals with those we love.

I laughed, cringed and swooned.

The characters were absolutely likable and though not my favorite type of trope it definitely had an easy flow and evolution that felt natural when the romance grew. And the drama, it was a train wreck that I could not look away from, and there was a ton of drama that added to plot.

This was definitely enjoyable; if you are looking for a standalone series that is cute and fun, easy to connect and laugh, this is right up your alley!

This is a bright stunning debut for readers like me who loved The Poet X, #felixeverafter and #aristotleanddantediscoverthesecretsoftheuniverse. Plus@orangeskyaudio
produced the audiobook and the narration was excellent.

Robin Gowโ€™sย A Million Quiet Revolutionsย is a modern love story, told in verse, about two teenaged trans boys who name themselves after two Revolutionary War soldiers.
For as long as they can remember, Aaron and Oliver have only ever had each other. In a small town with few queer teenagers, let alone young trans men, theyโ€™ve shared milestones like coming out as trans, buying the right binders โ€“ and falling for each other.
But just as their relationship has started to blossom, Aaron moves away. Feeling adrift, separated from the one person who understands them, they seek solace in digging deep into the annals of Americaโ€™s past. When they discover the story of two Revolutionary War soldiers who they believe to have been trans man in love, theyโ€™re inspired to pay tribute to these soldiers by adopting their names โ€“ Aaron and Oliver. As they learn, they delve further into unwritten queer stories, and they discover the transformative power of reclaiming oneโ€™s place in history.

Robin Gowย is a trans and queer poet, editor, and educator from rural Pennsylvania. They are the director and founder of Transcendent Connections, an organization that provides trans education resources to support trans youth. Gow also founded the New York City trans and queer reading series Gender Reveal Party. They live in Pennsylvania with their pugs, Gertrude and Eddie.

The plot's pace is measured, as life in Iceland in the early 1900s was about hard, physical work and family. This story combines a young woman breaking stereotypical roles with Icelandic folklore, customs, and the beauty of a rugged country.

๐Ÿ“– Growing up on a farm in early twentieth-century rural Iceland, Karitas ร“lafsdรณttir, one of six siblings, yearns for a new life. An artist, Karitas has a powerful calling and is determined to never let go of her true being, one unsuited for the conventional. But she is powerless against the fateful turns of real life and all its expectations of women. Pulled back time and again by design and by chance to the Icelandic countrysideโ€“as dutiful daughter, loving mother, and fishermanโ€™s wifeโ€“she struggles to thrive, to be what she was meant to be.โฃ
Spanning decades and set against a breathtaking historical canvas, Karitas Untitled, an award-winning classic of Icelandic literature, is a complex and immersive portrait of an artistโ€™s conflict with love, family, nature, and a country unaccustomed to an untraditional womanโ€“but most of all, with herself and the creative instincts she has no choice but to follow.โฃ

Do you believe that something good can come out of tragedy? Are you a glass half full or a glass half empty person? Millerโ€™s book sounds like an uplifting read that so many people could use right now! Looking forward to this one.

Alexis Marshall never meant to cause the accident that left Jon-Jon Robinson paralyzedโ€”but though guilt plagues her, her husband hopes to put the past behind them. After all, heโ€™s in the middle of selling a tech businessโ€”and if Alexis admits to texting while driving, the deal could collapse and cost them millions. Meanwhile, Alexisโ€™s life is not as shiny and perfect as it may seem from the outside. She has secrets of her own. As she becomes consumed with thoughts of the young man she hit, can she reconcile her mistake with her husbandโ€™s expectations?

Trish Robinson is just trying to hold it together after the accident that left Jon-Jon dependent and depressed. As the bills pile up, Trish and her husband, Dwayne, find themselves at odds. Trish wants to forgive and move on, but Dwayne is filled with rage toward the entitled woman who altered their lives forever. Trish canโ€™t see how anything good can come from so much hate and strife, so she determines to pray until God intervenes. Then one afternoon Marquita Lewis rings their doorbell with a baby in her arms and changes everything.

Vanessa Millerโ€™s latest inspirational novel reminds readers that differences may separate us, but if we cling to each other, God can bring something good out of our very worst moments.

DESCRIPTION
High school junior Gigi Wong strives to be the best: the top student, the perfect friend, and the ideal daughter. But it's tough when there's always someone who is just a little bit better. With college applications looming, she can't help but worry that she won't make the cut. Thankfully, her best friend Kyle never fails to find the right words--and the perfect bowl of ramen--to cheer her up.

After her teacher, Ms. Harris, announces she'll be nominating students for an app writing contest, Gigi is determined to be picked. After all, first prize is an exclusive tech internship, sure to make her application stand out. There's only one problem: she doesn't have a winning program. It isn't until transfer student Etta admits she's struggling to fit in at Superbia that Gigi stumbles on an idea. She'll use her coding skills--and the matchmaking experience she's gotten from weekends with Auntie Rose--to create a friend matching app! Etta will meet new people, and Gigi will guarantee her acceptance into college. It's foolproof.

What Gigi doesn't expect is for her app to go viral around school. Soon, she finds herself at the center of a scandal--and at odds with both Etta and Kyle. Can Gigi fix what went wrong, or will her desire to be perfect cost her the people she cares about most?

The inspiring true story of one manโ€™s treacherous boyhood journey from a rural village in Ghana to the streets of Barcelonaโ€“and the path that led him home.

Ousman Umar is a shamanโ€™s son born in a small village in Ghana. Though his mother died giving birth, he spent a contented childhood working the fields, setting traps in the jungle, and living off the land. Still, as strange and wondrous flying machines crisscrossed the skies overhead, Ousman dreamed of a different life. And so, when he was only twelve years old, he left his village and began what would be a five-year journey to Europe.

Every step of the way, as he traveled across the Sahara desert, through the daunting metropolises of Accra, Tripoli, Benghazi, and Casablanca, and over the Mediterranean Sea aboard a packed migrant dinghy, Ousman was handed off like merchandise by a loose network of smugglers and in the constant, foreboding company of โ€œsinkersโ€: other migrants who found themselves penniless and alone on their way north, unable to continue onward or return home.

But on a path rife with violence, exploitation, and racism, Ousman also encountered friendship, generosity, and hope. North to Paradise is a visceral true story about the stark realities of life along the most dangerous migrant route across Africa; it is also a portrait of extraordinary resilience in the face of unimaginable challenges, the beauty of kindness in strangers, and the power of giving back.

No matter your religious affiliation, I think most of us are yearning for peace right now. Unclutter Your Soul is a perfect remedy ๐Ÿค—

Synopsis โคต๏ธ

A unique biblical and practical approach to uncluttering our internal thoughts and feelings.

We all want our lives to change for the betterโ€“to become the healthiest versions of ourselves in spirit, soul, and body. Yet we still struggle. Author Trina McNeilly, looking for order in her own life, embarked on an inward journey to the home of her heart and soul to find healing and health from the inside out.

Unclutter Your Soul is for all of us who are cluttered and overwhelmed with loss, fear, chronic stress, unhealthy coping mechanisms, crippling depression, or anxiety. With the Holy Spirit as our guide, Trina says we can learn to

โœ”๏ธ observe: acknowledge the clutter,
โœ”๏ธown: make space for a healthy internal environment, and
โœ”๏ธovercome: take action with tools for living clutter-free from the inside out.

Each chapter in these three sections is written as an essay and concludes with practical and soulful tips as well as prompts to put them into action. With discussion questions and a prayer guide, Unclutter Your Soul is the ultimate resource for finding freedom in our everyday lives by releasing limited mindsets and creating more space for peace and joy.

Thank you @tlcbooktours @thomasnelson and @trina_mcneilly for my #gifted copy

#QOTD What kind of poetry, if any, do you like to read?

Like most bibliophiles who were once angsty teenagers, or like most readers who once felt loveโ€™s cruel sting, I have often solace in poetry. In both reading and writing them. Very few of my own poems made it out of my diary, of course, but during most of middle school and high school days, and even through my first semester in college, I kept a habit of handwriting and memorizing my favorite poems. The poets I loved back then were Christina Rossetti, Emily Bronteฬˆ, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Charlotte Mew, W.H. Auden, and naturally, the Romantics. And to this day, they remain my favorites. But that doesnโ€™t mean I donโ€™t read anything new!

Currently, for instance, I am indulging in myself with three beautiful poetry collections from @centavepub, each unique but as piercing and heartfelt as the others.

In ๐๐š๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ ๐†๐ข๐ซ๐ฅ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐Š๐ง๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ ๐“๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐Œ๐š๐๐ž ๐‡๐ž๐ซ, @ari.b.cofer takes us on journey to live life fully, through its highs and lows, while struggling with mental health. ๐“๐ก๐ž ๐’๐ฎ๐ซ๐ซ๐ž๐ง๐๐ž๐ซ ๐“๐ก๐ž๐จ๐ซ๐ฒ by @cgcpoems is an ode to love, loss, heartbreak, and grief โ€”a path to peace and closure. And @hinnah.xoโ€™s ๐๐š๐ง๐ ๐š๐ž๐š: ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ญ๐ซ๐ฒ addresses bodily trauma and the process of working through it, highlighting trauma that comes not just from another person, but also from a nation and from within.

Where my YA fans? I have a phenomenal book to recommend: WE WERE KINGS by Court Stevens. Itโ€™s a coming of age story with some mystery, and throw in some contentious subject matter. Itโ€™s available now to order or grab.

s y n o p s i s:

Twenty years ago, eighteen-year-old Francis Quick was convicted of murdering her best friend, Cora King, and sentenced to death. Now the highly debated Accelerated Death Penalty Act has passed giving Frankie thirty final days to live. Surprising everyone, one of the King family members sets out to challenge the woefully inadequate evidence and potential innocence of Frankie Quick.

The at-first reluctant but soon-fiery Nyla and her unexpected allyโ€”handsome country island boy Sam Stackโ€”bring Frankieโ€™s case to the international stage through her YouTube channel, Death Daze. They step into fame and a hometown battle that someoneโ€™s still willing to kill over. But who? The senator? The philanthropist? The pawn shop owner? Nylaโ€™s own mother?

Best advice: Donโ€™t go to family dinner at the Kingsโ€™ estate. More people will leave in body bags than on their own two feet. And as for Frankie Quick, sheโ€™s a gem . . . even if sheโ€™s guilty.

Thanks to @tlcbooktours @entangled_publishing and @mirandaliasson for my gifted copy of The Sweetheart Deal by Miranda Liasson. This is the first in the new Blossom Glen series - a small town romance and the main character is a pastry chef. I am always up for a great foodie romance!โฃ
 โฃ
๐˜š๐˜บ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฑ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ด: Pastry chef Tessa Montgomery knows what everyone in the teeny town of Blossom Glen says about her. Spinster. Ice Queen. Such a shame. Itโ€™s enough to make a woman bake her troubles away, dreaming of Parisian delicacies while she makes bread at her motherโ€™s struggling boulangerie. That is until Tessaโ€™s mortal enemyโ€•deliciously handsome (if arrogant) chef Leo Castorini, who owns the restaurant next doorโ€•proposes a business planโ€ฆto get married.โฃ
 โฃ
Leo knows that the Castorinis and the Montgomerys hate each other, but a marriage might just force these stubborn families to work together and blend their businesses for success. The deal is simple: Tessa and Leo marry, live together for six months, and then go their separate ways. Easy peasy. โฃ
 โฃ

Good morning my little pudding cups!

๐Ÿ’ญ Do you have a favorite classic novel?

As a big (big) fan of Wuthering Heights, the premise behind Twilight at Moorington Cross by Abigail Wilson jumped right out at me. While not really similar at all, you know Iโ€™m all about โœจvibesโœจ and this book definitely screams โ€œcreepy gothic romance with some weird shit going downโ€ and I am here for it.

Amelia, a patient at Moorington Cross at the behest of her late husband, suddenly becomes heiress to the estate after a shady death, but first she has to pick between two suitors and marry one of them in order to cash in on that inheritance. The biggest problem? She already had a husband that thought she was nuts and locked her up at Moorington Cross, so whatโ€™s to stop one of these men from taking everything away from her again? Oh, and sheโ€™s also kind of sort of definitely intrigued by (and very into) the solicitor who drafted the will and is trying to help her pick between the two do-do birds sheโ€™s got in front of her. And donโ€™t forget sheโ€™s trying to solve a murder at the same time, with the solicitor sheโ€™s crushing hard on.

This book is creepy and funny and witty, while still somehow elegant and proper, and it has been an absolute joy navigating this batshit situation with Amelia. Iโ€™m only a few chapters from the end and I am chomping at the bit to get back to it but, you know, work and life and adult responsibilities say otherwise which is rude, but here we are. I cannot wait to see how it ends, and I am absolutely delighted this book crossed my path so I could go on this gothic nightmare of an adventure.

Once Iโ€™m done youโ€™ll find me pacing the moors at dusk with a shawl around my shoulders praying for my lover to return.

Okay not really, but thatโ€™s how this book makes me feel and I think itโ€™d be fun.

Thank you, thank you, to #tlcbooktours and #thomasnelson for giving me a chance to read Twilight at Moorington Cross. It always makes me so happy when new novels cross my radar and this one has been a treat โ™ฅ๏ธ

Originally published in French as ๐˜“๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜›๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž is an exceptional lyrical novel written by Emelie Propheฬte and translated by Tina Kover. It is a novel about airports and coffee, solitude and grief, freedom and history. It is a book small in stature but gigantic, if you consider its beauty and profundity. It is a work of art that you, my friend, must read.

Donโ€™t ask me if ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž is poetry or prose or fiction or memoir, especially if youโ€™re looking for a straightforward answer. I wonโ€™t be able to give you one, because to me, it is all of these and more. I could give you a general summary of the book, maybe, but that wouldnโ€™t be enough to show you how the palimpsest of memories and meditations that permeate its pages conjures up image after vivid image, evoking emotions so piercing that the rest of the world simply falls away. I wonโ€™t be able to describe the heady stupor, the blissful melancholy that grips your chest the entire time youโ€™re reading ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž, and long after it. So instead, here is a jumble of words and phrases that might tell you a little about this book: Haiti, Caribbean, passports, the U.S., migration, family, home, a funeral, three lives, one narrator, many dreams, stream of consciousness. Here are a few more: womanhood, desire, desperation, time, liminality, life. โ€œA thread on the water. A fragile cord.โ€

Many thanks to @tlcbooktours and @amazonpublishing for my #ARC, to @tinakover444 for reminding me why I love translations, and to @emmelieprophete for giving me the most compelling reason to pick up French again. ๐Ÿ“š

If you asked me last year what is a genre I don't really read, I would have told you sci fi. I've always loved to watch sci fi movies or shows but when it comes to reading sci fi books, I always felt it was too confusing and complicated. This year one of my goals is to read more of my least read genres, which are fantasy and scifi. I want to take myself out of my comfort zone and recapture my love for these genres I once couldn't get enough of.

QOTD: What's your least read genre and why?

Light Years From Home by Mike Chen out 1/25 was a surprise hit for me. At first, I thought it was going to be too much for me to understand because it started off in outer space but Chen's storytelling quickly captured my attention. The story took on a life of its own & the characters introduced piqued my interest. I found myself captivated by the backstory of this family & I became invested right away.

What I really appreciated was Chen's ability to give just enough scifi elements without it getting too confusing. The story was well developed & once the climax was reached it kicked into high gear. The mind games had me second guessing what I thought was true. Chen's writing really blurred the lines of reality and mental health when the ending began to unfold. Chen also displayed strong writing skills in the ways that he shaped each character and their inner dialogues/dilemmas.

Family dramas are my jam and the added space theme was the cherry on top. This story really makes me think about how I would react if a family member disappeared and then returned years later claiming they were taken by aliens and they had a mission to complete. Would I even believe them, even though as an Aquarian I'm not from this planet anyway? I could totally relate to the sibling who had to take on the caregiver responsibilities without support. I am so glad I took a chance on this one because it was so good overall. It had the perfect balance between scifi and plot that I needed to get back into the genre.

Thanks to @_mira_books_ and @tlcdiversity for the gifted copy.

Are you a budgeter? Are you a โ€œmake a general plan and hope for the bestโ€ or a โ€œcash envelope, know where itโ€™s all goingโ€ kind of person?
โ€ฆโ€ฆ
For most of my grown up life I was winging it, but the last 3-4 months we moved to the envelope system and honestly? We donโ€™t hate it.
โ€ฆโ€ฆ
If youโ€™re in the โ€œI do nothing and play the lottery hoping for a miracleโ€, this is the book for you. Maybe youโ€™ve started, or you want to and are overwhelmed, this book is for you.
โ€ฆโ€ฆ
Iโ€™m going to share our journey soon, but you can get a sneak peek on my blog AND read my full review of this book (thank you @tlcbooktours and @thomasnelson for the copy)!
