About Lesley
LESLEY DORMEN was born in Shaker Heights, Ohio and lives in New York City, where she is the Associate Director of The Writers Studio and teaches fiction writing. Her short stories have been published in The Atlantic Monthly, Ploughshares, Five Points, Open City, Glimmer Train and Ladies’ Home Journal. Two have been included in “100 Other Distinguished Stories” of the year in Best American Short Stories. Her articles, essays, and humor have appeared in magazines that include O, The Oprah Magazine, Elle, Ladies’ Home Journal, Glamour, Redbook, Mademoiselle, Mirabella, Seventeen, Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, Psychology Today and Playboy.
Lesley’s book The Best Place to Be is a novel in stories, and all of the stories are told by the same narrator, Grace, at pivotal moments in her life, between the ages of 18 and 50ish. This is literary fiction with terrific mass appeal–a first person narrator who is page-turningly appealing. Most of the stories are set in Greenwich Village. The book has depth, the stories do not proceed chronologically, they circle around in time, so we see Grace in the round.
Elle magazine said, “Virginia Woolf meets Candace Bushnell in these funny, beautifully written linked stories of one woman’s struggle to get through the business of ordinary life.” O the Oprah magazine said hers is “…a journey that is smack-your-forehead familiar, and so crazily funny you could cry.”
