Some of my reading goals for 2021 include reading more Queer stories, more Own-Voice authors, more nonfiction, and more translated books and I'm in Seattle, Where Are You by Mortada Gzar encompasses all of them. This memoir is a moving tale about identity,ย loss, family, love, and the strength of the human spirit. A definite must read!

Are you a reader of memories? I didn't always use to be a fan but the older I get the more I want to know how others have lived their lives. How their story went because half the time I don't know where I'm going or what I'm supposed to be doing. Is that weird? I hope not.

The synopsis is available in the comments. I hope you check this beautiful book out.

A big thanks to @tlcbooktours @tlcdiversity and @amazonpublishing for sending this lovely book my way *partners ##diversereads #ownvoicesbooks #humansofbookstagram #bookrecs #bookreviews #booksofinstagram #bookclubofinstagram #bookaddict #workspaceinspo

Feature // a giant thank you to @tlcbooktours and @thomasnelson and, of course, @theholdernessfamily for my copy of this book which is one of my most anticipated reads!

What do you do to work on your relationship?

When our girls were little we were so busy driving them to soccer, gymnastics, tennis, dance, ice skating, friendsโ€™ housesโ€ฆit seemed like we were two ships passing in the night and we hardly ever connected. As long as those days seem at the time, they donโ€™t last forever and now that our girls are in college, Jason and I have been able to have more date nights - even if itโ€™s a Covid dinner in the dining room while the girls eat in their bedrooms.

After nearly 25 years of marriage we know each otherโ€™s triggers and we accept and work with them, which means that we donโ€™t fight as much as we used to. But we both have very different styles of fighting. Jason gets quiet and retreats, sometimes even leaves and goes to a friendโ€™s house; I, on the other hand, have a temper and want to scream and yell and him leaving mid-fight really just ups the ante for me and makes me furious. So when I heard that @theholdernessfamily had a book about fighting -which is really a book about how to better communicate with your partner - I knew I wanted to read it!

One chapter in and I asked my husband if he would read it with me. We have both read and discussed the first two chapters. I took notes and he made a โ€œcheat sheetโ€ to help us remember some of their tips for communicating what you want and need from your partner.

What is your fighting style? Do you yell and scream? Or do you get quiet and leave? Do you and your partner know each otherโ€™s triggers and avoid them?

Raise your hand if you're a Chip & Jo fan or a fan of the Magnolia brand! โฃ
โฃ
I definitely am. I've watched Fixer Upper, visited the Silos and shop the Magnolia brand at Target. โฃ
โฃ
When we visited the Silos last year, I noticed there was a whole store dedicated to Chip's recommendations and favorites and his book was featured. I knew I'd want to read it sometime, so was delighted when @tlcbooktours reached out with a chance.โฃ
โฃ
In this book, Chips shares about how networks are essential for building anything - and by networks, we mean your own home team or community. Chip & Jo have been successfully flipping houses for years, hosting a TV show and creating products, but when they went to build their own tv network, they realized it would not come easy. โฃ
โฃ
According to Chip, if you want a network that will pull you into a life of meaning, a life of joy and connection, you need to be intentional about choosing the people in it. People who are enlivened and electrified by the power of living according to their purpose, who are always in pursuit of lifelong learning, and who have a sincere belief that relationships are more than transactions. Chip Gaines has been building that kind of network his whole life, and he can tell you, it doesnโ€™t come easy.โฃ
โฃ
To say it requires sweat equity would be an understatement. It requires faith in people. It requires hope. And it requires a willingness to grow even when it hurts. From hard-won lessons and personal stories from Chip, No Pain, No Gaines is a by-the-bootstraps manual for building a network you can count on.โฃ

This immersive dive into the life and work of Salvador Dalรญ unlocks the secret of this creative genius and reveals for the first time how his erotically charged paintings changed the world of modern art.โฃ

In this stunning volume, rich with more than 150 full-color images, noted art historians Jean-Pierre Isbouts and Christopher Heath Brown discuss the historical, social, and political conditions that shaped Dalรญโ€™s work, identify the impact of Modern as well as Old Master art, and present an unflinching view of the masterโ€™s personal relationships and motivations. With their deeply compelling narrative, Isbouts and Brown uncover how Dalรญโ€™s visual wit and enduring cult of personality still impacts fashion, literature, and art, from Andy Warhol to Lady Gaga, and seeks to answer why, in an age of shock and awe, Dalรญโ€™s art still manages to distress, perplex, and entertain.โฃ

He wakes one morning to find that something has attacked one of his beehives, brutally killing every inhabitant. Heartbroken, he soon learns that a mysterious swarm of vicious hornets committed the mass murderโ€”but where did they come from, and how can he stop them? How pretty! ๐ŸŒธ Repost from @stumblingintobooks
โ€ข
This book was raw and real. Stewart crafted beautifully imperfect characters that allow us to see ourselves in their struggles.

Even the most put-together family, like the Flynnโ€™s, can have a hidden secret!

This story follows Maggie as she navigates life after her husbandโ€™s death, and the life she experiences with her two best friends and her two daughters.

I spent the majority of the novel on the edge of my chair cheering for Maggie and her daughters.

This book also gives off what Iโ€™d consider Virgin River vibes, so if you like that series, grab this one and give it a try. I really need another book to come along and tell me what happens with the rest of their story!

There are several trigger warnings, so if youโ€™re concerned, my DMs are always open and I will be honest before you jump into this one!

Thank you @mariah_stewart_books and @tlcbooktours for my #gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.

This book would make a lovely gift for a special religious occasion or for your own home library. Lots of books come into our home, and this is the first one my Pa took from the pile and placed in our living room. When I saw it there, he made a point to tell me not to give it away (he knows Iโ€™m generous with the amount of books I receive) and that it was stunning. If that isnโ€™t a recommendation, I donโ€™t know what is! It really is lovely and one I look forward to referencing often.โฃ
โฃ
Do you have a favorite religious tradition or story in your family? As much as I love Christmas, Easter and Resurrection Sunday is so special to me! Iโ€™m looking forward to it.โฃ

Anyone who knows me knows Iโ€™ve seen almost every season of the bachelor. Ben Higgins was one of my favorite bachelors because of his kind nature and attitude! I also thought he had a really great group of women in his season. โฃ
โฃ
Ben took his fame in another direction after the Bachelor. He felt that not many people knew the true Ben even though he put himself out there on the show. He threw himself into his charities, Generous Coffee and Humanity and Hope United. This book is a little more religious that I would have liked, but Ben turned to religion to help him find himself after the show aired. This definitely isnโ€™t a Bachelor confession book, but itโ€™s still very interesting to see what heโ€™s done since the show.โฃ

In this true love story that defies all odds, Josefine Lobnik, a Yugoslav partisan heroine, and Bruce Murray, a New Zealand soldier, discover love in the midst of a brutal war.โฃ
โฃ
In the heart of Nazi-occupied Europe, two people meet fleetingly in a chance encounter. One an underground resistance fighter, a bold young woman determined to vanquish the enemy occupiers; the other a prisoner of war, a man longing to escape the confines of the camp so he can battle again. A crumpled note passes between these two strangers, slipped through the wire of the compound, and sets them on a course that will change their lives forever.โฃ
โฃ
Woven through their tales of great bravery, daring escapes, betrayal, torture, and retaliation is their remarkable love story that survived against all odds. This is an extraordinary account of two ordinary people who found love during the unimaginable hardships of Hitlerโ€™s barbaric regime as told by their son-in-law Doug Gold, who decided to tell their story from the moment he heard about their remarkable tale of bravery, resilience, and resistance.โฃ

One of my biggest goals for 2021 is the highlight queer stories, and Iโ€™m so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to receive an early copy of Iโ€™M IN SEATTLE, WHERE ARE YOU? by Mortada Gzar. Just reading the synopsis, it already has me ready to bawl. ๐Ÿ˜ญ Iโ€™m definitely going to be picking up this story for my April TBRโ€”let me know if you plan to read it or if you have any other queer memoirs to send my way!

SYNOPSIS

An award-winning Iraqi writer creates a new world for himself in Seattle in search of lost love.
As the US occupation of Iraq rages, novelist Mortada Gzar, a student at the University of Baghdad, has a chance encounter with Morise, an African American soldier. Itโ€™s love at first sight, a threat to them both, and a moment of self-discovery. Challenged by societyโ€™s rejection and Moriseโ€™s return to the US, Mortada takes to the page to understand himself.
In his deeply affecting memoir, Mortada interweaves tales of his childhood work as a scrap-metal collector in a war zone and the indignities faced by openly gay artists in Iraq with his impossible love story and journey to the US. Marginalized by his own society, he is surprised to discover the racism he finds in a new one. At its heart, Iโ€™m in Seattle, Where Are You? is a moving tale of love and resilience.

One sentence review: A classic mystery with Queen Elizabeth as the lead sleuth - what's not to love?โฃโฃ

I've always been a fan of a good mystery. So when I read the synopsis of this one and saw that Queen Elizabeth is the protagonist, I knew this was a book I needed to read. โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
The book is set in 2016 before the Queen's 90th birthday celebration. A guest at Windsor Castle, a young Russian pianist, is found strangled. As MI5 gets involved, the Queen finds herself increasingly frustrated with the direction the investigation is going in. And so the fun begins.โฃโฃ

For me this book delivered everything I wanted: respectful behind the scenes fiction on what life as the Queen might look like, interesting characters, and most importantly an interesting mystery that kept me guessing.โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
I recommend this book for people who love a classic mystery or who love everything royal. โฃโฃ
โฃโฃ
I was also lucky enough to get an alc for this book. I thought the narration was done really well. There are a lot of characters but the narrator did a good job in keeping them distinct so there wasn't a lot of confusion.โฃโฃ

Nobody knows the people of Wooster, Ohio, better than switchboard operator Vivian Dalton, and sheโ€™d be the first to tell you that. She calls it intuition. Her teenage daughter, Charlotte, calls it eavesdropping. Vivian and the other women who work at Bell on East Liberty Street connect lines and lives. They arenโ€™t supposed to listen in on conversations, but they do, and they all have opinions on what they hearโ€”especially Vivian.โฃ
โฃ
One night, Vivian listens in on a call between that snob Betty Miller and someone whose voice she canโ€™t quite place and hears something shocking. Betty Millerโ€™s mystery friend has news that, if true, will shatter Vivianโ€™s tidy life in Wooster, humiliating her and making her the laughingstock of the town. Vivian may be mortified, but she isnโ€™t going to take this lying down. Sheโ€™s going to get to the bottom of that rumor because she wants the truth, no matter how painful it may be.โฃ

But as Vivian is about to be reminded, in a small town like Wooster, one secret usually leads to another. . . .โฃ

What's your favorite recent book cover?โฃ
โ˜ โฃ
Thank you @harpervoyagerus and @tlcbooktours for sending me a copy of The Bone Maker by @sarahbethdurst! This cover was my most recent favorite!โฃ
I receive a lot of books each month and every once in a while my husband comments on how much he likes the cover of one. This book was one of them. I very much agree.โฃ
โ˜ โฃ
Synopsis:โฃ
Twenty-five years ago, five heroes risked their lives to defeat the bone maker Eklorโ€”a corrupt magician who created an inhuman army using animal bones. But victory came at a tragic price. Only four of the heroes survived. โฃ
โฃ
Since then, Kreya, the groupโ€™s leader, has exiled herself to a remote tower and devoted herself to one purpose: resurrecting her dead husband. But such a task requires both a cache of human bones and a sacrificeโ€”for each day he lives, she will live one less.โฃ
โฃ
Sheโ€™d rather live one year with her husband than a hundred without him, but using human bones for magic is illegal in Vos. The dead are burnedโ€”as are any bone workers who violate the law. Yet Kreya knows where she can find the bones she needs: the battlefield where her husband and countless others lost their lives.โฃ
โฃ
But defying the laws of the land exposes a terrible possibility. Maybe the dead donโ€™t rest in peace after all. โฃ
โฃ
Five warriorsโ€”one broken, one gone soft, one pursuing a simple life, one stuck in the past, and one who should be dead. Their story should have been finished. But evil doesnโ€™t stop just because someone once said, โ€œthe end.โ€

Everybody Fights, So Why Not Get Better At It!
Kim and Penn Holderness

Happy Pub Day to this book!! I want to thank @thomasnelson @theholdernessfamily and @tlcbooktours for having me on this tour and to get the opportunity to review their new book Everybody Fights.

I really did enjoy the audiobook version of this book and want a physical copy. I think it would be helpful for me to have both as there are parts where they encourage you to jot notes for you to think about or activities for the couple to do.

The audiobook version played more like a podcast and I think that keeps the tone more upbeat and it moves quickly. There are many personal stories that the reader can relate to.

Some of my favorite chapters and or take always were the โ€œsecret contractsโ€ and โ€œdonโ€™t leave the airportโ€. These are two aspects I struggle with so they gave me great practical advice.

The Holderness family does not claim to be experts on relationships or communication in this book. They take the lessons they have learned over the years and pass them along to the reader. I appreciated it, I found value where I needed to. Marriage is messy and we can always use a tune up and take away something to help us with personal growth.

I will say that there is some Christian marketing to this book and there is absolutely nothing Christian about the book. There are a few cuss words and no scripturei to be found. Not this this book is bad at all, just wanting to make sure people are aware.

Overall I really enjoyed this book โญ๏ธ โญ๏ธ โญ๏ธ โญ๏ธ ๐Ÿ’ซ .

What is your earliest memory? I can remember a few events from when I was 3 years old. I've often wondered why we remember some things more clearly than others. And it is interesting how we can suppress memories of trauma for years, until something triggers us to remember. Suppressed memories play a part in this novel providing an element ofย mystery to this unique historical fiction. When a painting triggers a dramatic response from Elizabeth Quinn, snippets of suppressed memories undermine everything she knows about her life.ย  Dual timelines are effectivelyย used to help unravel the secrets from the past. The author vividly brings post-colonialย Australia to life, making this an atmospheric read. I paired the audiobook with my copy and found myself binge listening to this engaging, enjoyable novel. Australia is always a great armchair travel destination.

Cover synopsis:

A young prodigy in need of family. A painting that shatters a womanโ€™s peace. And a decades-old mystery demanding to be solved.
Australia, 1906
Orphan Jane Piper is nine years old when philanthropist siblings Michael and Elizabeth Quinn take her into their home to further her schooling. The Quinns are no strangers to hardshipโ€” having arrived in Australia as penniless immigrants, they now care for others as lost as they once were.
Despite Janeโ€™s mysterious past, her remarkable aptitude for mathematics takes her far over the next seven years, and her relationship with Elizabeth and Michael flourishes as she plays an increasingly prominent part in their business.
But when Elizabeth reacts in terror to an exhibition at the local gallery, Jane realizes no one knows Elizabeth after allโ€”not even Elizabeth herself. As the past and the present converge and Elizabethโ€™s grasp on reality loosens, Jane sets out to unravel Elizabethโ€™s story before it is too late.
From the gritty reality of the Australian goldfields to the grand institutions of Sydney, this compelling novel takes us on a mystery across continents and decades as both women finally discover a place to call hom
