February – March 2017 Month of Maisie Readalong for Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs series

February 16, 2017 By trish Leave a Comment

To celebrate the release of Jacqueline Winspear’s 13th novel in the Maisie Dobbs series,
In This Grave Hour,
we’re hosting a series blog tour during the months of February and March.

About Maisie Dobbs

Maisie Dobbs, Psychologist and Investigator, began her working life at the age of thirteen as a servant in a Belgravia mansion, only to be discovered reading in the library by her employer, Lady Rowan Compton. Fearing dismissal, Maisie is shocked when she discovers that her thirst for education is to be supported by Lady Rowan and a family friend, Dr. Maurice Blanche. But The Great War intervenes in Maisie’s plans, and soon after commencement of her studies at Girton College, Cambridge, Maisie enlists for nursing service overseas. Years later, in 1929, having apprenticed to the renowned Maurice Blanche, a man revered for his work with Scotland Yard, Maisie sets up her own business. Her first assignment, a seemingly tedious inquiry involving a case of suspected infidelity, takes her not only on the trail of a killer, but back to the war she had tried so hard to forget.

About Birds of a Feather

An eventful year has passed for Maisie Dobbs. Since starting a one-woman private investigation agency in 1929 London, she now has a professional office in Fitzroy Square and an assistant, the happy-go-lucky Billy Beale. She has proven herself as a psychologist and investigator, and has even won over Detective Inspector Stratton of Scotland Yard’s Murder Squad—an admirable achievement for a woman who worked her way from servant to scholar to sleuth, and who also served as a battlefield nurse in the Great War.

It’s now the early Spring of 1930. Stratton is investigating a murder case in Coulsden, while Maisie has been summoned to Dulwich to find a runaway heiress. The woman is the daughter of Joseph Waite, a wealthy self-made man who has lavished her with privilege but kept her in a gilded cage. His domineering ways have driven her off before, and now she’s bolted again.

About Pardonable Lies

In the third novel of this unique and masterly crime series, a deathbed plea from his wife leads Sir Cecil Lawton, KC, to seek the aid of Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator. As Maisie soon learns, Agnes Lawton never accepted that her aviator son was killed in the Great War, a torment that led her not only to the edge of madness but also to the doors of those who practice the dark arts and commune with the spirit world. Determined to prove Ralph Lawton either dead or alive, Maisie is plunged into a case that tests her spiritual strength, as well as her regard for her mentor, Maurice Blanche. The mission will bring her to France and reunite her with her old friend Priscilla Evernden, who lost three brothers in the war, one of whom has an intriguing connection to the case.

Set against a finely drawn portrait of life between the World Wars, Pardonable Lies is “a thrilling mystery that will enthrall fans of Jacqueline Winspear’s heroine and likely win her new ones” (Detroit Free Press).

About Messenger of Truth

London, 1931. The night before an exhibition of his artwork opens at a famed Mayfair gallery, the controversial artist Nick Bassington-Hope falls to his death. The police rule it an accident, but Nick’s twin sister, Georgina, a wartime journalist and a infamous figure in her own right, isn’t convinced.

When the authorities refuse to consider her theory that Nick was murdered, Georgina seeks out a fellow graduate from Girton College, Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator, for help. Nick was a veteran of World War I, and before long the case leads Maisie to the desolate beaches of Dungeness in Kent, and into the sinister underbelly of the city’s art world.

About An Incomplete Revenge

With the country in the grip of economic malaise, Maisie Dobbs is relieved to accept an apparently straightforward assignment to investigate a potential land purchase. Her inquiries take her to a picturesque village in Kent during the hop-picking season, but beneath its pastoral surface she finds evidence that something is amiss. Mysterious fires erupt in the village with alarming regularity, and a series of petty crimes suggest a darker criminal element at work. A peculiar secrecy shrouds the village, and ultimately Maisie must draw on her finely-honed skills of detection to solve one of her most intriguing cases yet.

About Among the Mad

Christmas Eve, 1931. On the way to see a client, Maisie Dobbs witnesses a man commit suicide on a busy London street. The following day, the Prime Minister’s office receives a letter threatening a massive loss of life if certain demands are not met—and the writer mentions Maisie by name. Tapped by Scotland Yard’s elite Special Branch to be a special adviser on the case, Maisie is soon involved in a race against time to find a man who proves he has the knowledge and will to inflict destruction on thousands of innocent people.

In Among the Mad, Jacqueline Winspear combines a heart-stopping story with a rich evocation of a fascinating period to create her most compelling and satisfying novel yet.

About The Mapping of Love and Death

August 1914. As Michael Clifton is mapping land he has just purchased in California’s beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, war is declared in Europe—and duty-bound to his father’s native country, the young cartographer soon sets sail for England to serve in the British army. Three years later, he is listed as missing in action.

April 1932. After Michael’s remains are unearthed in France, his parents retain London psychologist and investigator Maisie Dobbs, hoping she can find the unnamed nurse whose love letters were among their late son’s belongings. It is a quest that leads Maisie back to her own bittersweet wartime love—and to the stunning discovery that Michael Clifton was murdered in his dugout. Suddenly an exposed web of intrigue and violence threatens to ensnare the dead soldier’s family and even Maisie herself as she attempts to cope with the impending loss of her mentor and the unsettling awareness that she is once again falling in love.

About A Lesson in Secrets

In the summer of 1932, the career of psychologist and investigator Maisie Dobbs takes an exciting new turn when she accepts an undercover assignment from the British Secret Service. Sent to pose as a junior lecturer at a private college in Cambridge, she will monitor any activities “not in the interests of His Majesty’s government.”

When the college’s controversial pacifist founder, Greville Liddicote, is murdered, however, Maisie is directed to stand back as her colleagues in Scotland Yard spearhead the investigation. But she soon discovers that the circumstances of Liddicote’s death appear inextricably linked to the suspicious comings and goings of faculty members and students under her surveillance. To unravel this web, the investigator must overcome a reluctant Secret Service, discover shameful hidden truths about Britain’s conduct during the Great War, and face off against the rising power of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei—the Nazi Party—as the storm clouds of World War II gather on the horizon.

About Elegy for Eddie

Early April 1933. To the costermongers of Covent Garden—sellers of fruits and vegetables on the London streets—Eddie Pettit was a gentle soul with a near-magical gift for working with horses. So who would want to kill him . . . and why?

Maisie Dobbs’s father, Frankie, had been a costermonger, and she remembers Eddie fondly. But it soon becomes clear that powerful political and financial forces are determined to prevent her from learning the truth behind Eddie’s death. Maisie’s search for answers on the working-class streets of Lambeth leads her to unexpected places and people: to a callous press baron; to a has been politician named Winston Churchill; and, most surprisingly, to Douglas Partridge, the husband of her dearest friend, Priscilla. As Maisie uncovers lies and manipulation on a national scale, she must decide whether to risk everything to see justice done.

Leaving Everything Most LovedAbout Leaving Everything Most Loved

In Leaving Everything Most Loved by New York Times bestselling author Jacqueline Winspear, Maisie Dobbs investigates the murder of Indian immigrants in London.

The year is 1933. Maisie Dobbs is contacted by an Indian gentleman who has come to England in the hopes of finding out who killed his sister two months ago. Scotland Yard failed to make any arrest in the case, and there is reason to believe they failed to conduct a thorough investigation. The case becomes even more challenging when another Indian woman is murdered just hours before a scheduled interview. Meanwhile, unfinished business from a previous case becomes a distraction, as does a new development in Maisie’s personal life.

Bringing a crucial chapter in the life and times of Maisie Dobbs to a close, Leaving Everything Most Loved marks a pivotal moment in this outstanding mystery series.

A Dangerous PlaceAbout A Dangerous Place

Maisie Dobbs returns in a powerful story of political intrigue and personal tragedy: a brutal murder in the British garrison town of Gibraltar leads the investigator into a web of lies, deceit, and danger.

Spring 1937. In the four years since she left England, Maisie Dobbs has experienced love, contentment, stability—and the deepest tragedy a woman can endure. Now, all she wants is the peace she believes she might find by returning to India. But her sojourn in the hills of Darjeeling is cut short when her stepmother summons her home to England: her aging father, Frankie Dobbs, is not getting any younger.

On a ship bound for England, Maisie realizes she isn’t ready to return. Against the wishes of the captain who warns her, “You will be alone in a most dangerous place,” she disembarks in Gibraltar. Though she is on her own, Maisie is far from alone: the British garrison town is teeming with refugees fleeing a brutal civil war across the border in Spain.

And the danger is very real. Days after Maisie’s arrival, a photographer and member of Gibraltar’s Sephardic Jewish community, Sebastian Babayoff, is murdered, and Maisie becomes entangled in the case, drawing the attention of the British Secret Service. Under the suspicious eye of a British agent, Maisie is pulled deeper into political intrigue on “the Rock”—arguably Britain’s most important strategic territory—and renews an uneasy acquaintance in the process. At a crossroads between her past and her future, Maisie must choose a direction, knowing that England is, for her, an equally dangerous place, but in quite a different way.

About Journey to Munich

Working with the British Secret Service on an undercover mission, Maisie Dobbs is sent to Hitler’s Germany in this thrilling tale of danger and intrigue—the twelfth novel in Jacqueline Winspear’s New York Times bestselling “series that seems to get better with each entry” (Wall Street Journal).

It’s early 1938, and Maisie Dobbs is back in England. On a fine yet chilly morning, as she walks towards Fitzroy Square—a place of many memories—she is intercepted by Brian Huntley and Robert MacFarlane of the Secret Service. The German government has agreed to release a British subject from prison, but only if he is handed over to a family member. Because the man’s wife is bedridden and his daughter has been killed in an accident, the Secret Service wants Maisie—who bears a striking resemblance to the daughter—to retrieve the man from Dachau, on the outskirts of Munich.

The British government is not alone in its interest in Maisie’s travel plans. Her nemesis—the man she holds responsible for her husband’s death—has learned of her journey, and is also desperate for her help.

Traveling into the heart of Nazi Germany, Maisie encounters unexpected dangers—and finds herself questioning whether it’s time to return to the work she loved. But the Secret Service may have other ideas. . . .

“A female investigator every bit as brainy and battle-hardened as Lisbeth Salander.” — Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s Fresh Air, on Maisie Dobbs

Sunday September 3rd 1939.  At the moment Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain broadcasts to the nation Britain’s declaration of war with Germany, a senior Secret Service agent breaks into Maisie Dobbs’ flat to await her return. Dr. Francesca Thomas has an urgent assignment for Maisie: to find the killer of a man who escaped occupied Belgium as a boy, some twenty-three years earlier during the Great War.

In a London shadowed by barrage balloons, bomb shelters and the threat of invasion, within days another former Belgian refugee is found murdered.  And as Maisie delves deeper into the killings of the dispossessed from the “last war,” a new kind of refugee — an evacuee from London — appears in Maisie’s life. The little girl billeted at Maisie’s home in Kent does not, or cannot, speak, and the authorities do not know who the child belongs to or who might have put her on the “Operation Pied Piper” evacuee train.  They know only that her name is Anna.

As Maisie’s search for the killer escalates, the country braces for what is to come.  Britain is approaching its gravest hour — and Maisie could be nearing a crossroads of her own.

Today’s feature is an emotional post-WWII story based on true events & set in Italy.

Synopsis: Though Mussolini and the fascists have been defeated, the war has devastated Italy, especially the south. Seven-year-old Amerigo lives with his mother Antonietta in Naples, surviving on odd jobs and his wits like the rest of the poor in his neighborhood. But one day, Amerigo learns that a train will take him away from the rubble-strewn streets of the city to spend the winter with a family in the north, where he will be safe and have warm clothes and food to eat.

Together with thousands of other southern children, Amerigo will cross the entire peninsula to a new life. Through his curious, innocent eyes, we see a nation rising from the ashes of war, reborn. As he comes to enjoy his new surroundings and the possibilities for a better future, Amerigo will make the heartbreaking choice to leave his mother and become a member of his adoptive family.
Amerigo’s journey is a moving story of memory, indelible bonds, artistry, and self-exploration, and a soaring examination of what family can truly mean. Ultimately Amerigo comes to understand that sometimes we must give up everything, even a mother’s love, to find our destiny.

Who doesn’t love animal behavior? Especially these days, to be honest, when the humans seem to be letting us down so…

I’m thrilled to be part of TLC’s book tour for Wild Rituals, in which author Caitlin O’Connell, PhD--a faculty member at Harvard Med School, behavioral ecologist & world-renowned elephant scientist as well an award-winning author who spent more than 30 years studying animals in the wild—dives into the rituals of elephants, apes, zebras, rhinos, lions, whales, flamingos & many more.

Wild Rituals explores how embracing the rituals of the animal kingdom can make us more connected to ourselves, nature, & others; if we better understand how we are similar to wild animals, we can find healing, self-awareness, community & self-reinvention. The book covers 10 different animal rituals & features full-color photos, from the Caribbean to the African savannah, as O’Connell documents her journeys into the desert, tundra & rainforest, revealing how animals can help us find a simpler, more meaningful way of life. We are actually profoundly similar to the wild creatures who captivate us & this remarkable book taps into the unspoken languages of creatures around the world.

In a culture of technology where we find ourselves living at a greater distance from nature & each other, this one is sure to help us see how to connect more deeply and meaningfully again.

Thank you @tlcbooktours for my advanced copy of I FOUND LOVE, out today! Very excited for this one & I already know my sister will want to borrow after.
———————
SYNOPSIS:
From the influential and ever-growing movement I Am Second, a remarkable collection of stories of people searching for and finding love.

When I Am Second launched in 2008, the organization intended simply to tell stories of lives changed utterly by people placing God first and themselves second. Although the organization has exploded in size and influence since, that original mission has remained the same–and continues to have enormous power and influence today. I Found Love is the highly anticipated new book from I Am Second, gathering together stories of people who searched everywhere for fulfillment and wholeness and found it only when they surrendered to God. People whose stories appear include the following, among others: David and Tamela Mann, Jason Castro, Sean Lowe & Stephen Baldwin. Moving, compelling, and profoundly inspiring, the stories found here remind us that our hearts will always be restless until they find their rest in God and always unsatisfied until we find the love of God.

@tlcbooktours is celebrating the tour for A CHILD LOST by @michellecoxwrites with a giveaway for a $100 Amazon gift card! Head over to @tlcbooktours for details.

A CHILD LOST is the latest in the Henrietta and Inspector Howard series. You can even listen to the whole series on audio! Use the link for @librofm in today’s story to get the first book free!

I admit this is my first Michelle Cox book, but it definitely won’t be the last! This is actually the FIFTH book that features the power duo of Henrietta Von Harmon and Inspector Clive Howard, but it read well as a stand alone.

All of these books are historical mysteries set in 1930’s Chicago. In this story, Henrietta is suffering from depression after a recent miscarriage. Clive takes on a new case hoping to boost the baby blues for Henrietta. Meanwhile Henrietta’s sister has asked her to help her beau in a missing persons case. Both cases are more than they bargained for and weave together the mystery of a spiritualist, an insane asylum, and a lost girl.

The writing style fully immerses you in the story! It is incredibly detailed, full of classic twists and turns, and the historical elements are well researched. The Mundelein Seminary, Bohemian Home for Orphans and Dunning Asylum (also called the Tomb for the Living) are all real places. The story exposes the horrific range of treatment back then for patients dealing with mental illness and the system so rife with abuse.

I devoured this book in one sitting! It is a truly entertaining and suspenseful page turner. I think fans of both mystery and historical fiction will enjoy the story. It does make me want to go back and read her earlier books to fully appreciate how Henrietta and Clives relationship has grown.

Don’t forget to head to @tlcbooktours for the Amazon Gift Card giveaway!

CW: miscarriage , depression, mental health, missing child, and domestic violence.

She joins her cousin in nursing the wounded at a convalescent home deep in the wilds of Scotland at a crumbling castle where its laird is less than welcoming. Alec MacGregor has given his entire life to preserving his home of Kinclavoch Castle, but mounting debts force him to sell off his family history bit by bit. Labeled a coward for not joining his countrymen in the trenches due to an old injury, he opens his home to the Tommies to make recompense while he keeps to the shadows. But his preference for the shadows is shattered when a new American nurse comes streaming into the castle on a burst of light. Lily and Alec are thrown together when a series of mysterious events threatens to ruin the future of Kinclavoch. Can they put aside their differences to find the culprit before it’s too late, or will their greatest distraction be falling in love? (Goodreads Synopsis)

Book Feature!

2021 is the year I work on spirituality and spiritual growth- so when @tlcbooktours reached out about this book- I knew it was a perfect place to start!

Synopsis: “When I Am Second launched in 2008, the organization intended simply to tell stories of lives changed utterly by people placing God first and themselves second. Although the organization has exploded in size and influence since, that original mission has remained the same–and continues to have enormous power and influence today. Moving, compelling, and profoundly inspiring, the stories found here remind us that our hearts will always be restless until they find their rest in God and always unsatisfied until we find the love of God.”

This book reminds me of the chicken soup for the soul books I used to read as a teenager- and cannot wait to read and discuss this! Pub day is tomorrow so be on the lookout for this beauty!

What are some of your 2021 goals?

Book description:⁣
The streets of London are paved with gold ...allegedly. They may be twin sisters, but Lizzie and Penny Berry are complete opposites - Penny is blonde, thin and outrageous; Lizzie quiet, thoughtful and definitely not thin. The one trait they do share is a desire to DO something with their lives, and as far as they are concerned, the place to get noticed is London. Out of the blue they discover they have a grandmother living in Chelsea - and when she has to go into hospital, they find themselves flat-sitting on the King's Road. But, as they discover, it's not as easy to become It Girls as they'd imagined, and west end boys aren't at all like Hugh Grant ...⁣

Scotland Yard detective Ian Rutledge is assigned one of the most baffling investigations of his career—a cold murder case with an unidentified victim and a cold trail with few clues to follow.⁣
⁣
Chief Inspector Brian Leslie, a respected colleague of Ian Rutledge’s, is sent to Avebury, a village set inside a great prehistoric stone circle not far from Stonehenge.⁣
⁣
A young woman has been murdered next to a mysterious, hooded, figure-like stone, but no one recognizes her—or admits to it. And how did she get there? Despite a thorough investigation, it appears that her killer has simply vanished.⁣
⁣
Rutledge, returning from the conclusion of a case involving another apparently unknown woman, is asked to take a second look at Leslie’s inquiry, to see if he can identify this victim. But Rutledge is convinced Chief Superintendent Jameson only hopes to tarnish his earlier success once he also fails.⁣
⁣
Where to begin? He too finds very little to go on in Avebury, slowly widening his search beyond the village—only to discover that unlikely—possibly even unreliable—clues are pointing him toward an impossible solution, one that will draw the wrath of the Yard down on him, and very likely see him dismissed if he pursues it. But what about the victim—what does he owe this tragic woman? Where must his loyalty lie?⁣

How's everyone doing?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I missed all of you, and I'm back to posting after a social media hiatus. I'm really glad I took a break to refocus my energy especially with everything going on in the world right now.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I also wanted to thank everyone who checked in with me the past few weeks. It reminds me why I joined this community in the first place.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I always get excited to share a historical fiction book since it's one of my favorite genres.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
News of the World is a post Civil War era novel, where an aging itinerant news reader, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, agrees to transport a young captive of the Kiowa back to her people in this exquisitely rendered, morally complex, multilayered novel from the author of Simon the Fiddler that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I'm looking forward to reading this one as well as watching it on the big screen.⁣⁣

What book or movie are you looking forward to in 2021?⁣⁣

Good evening! I got nothing today. It’s been raining all day and I had dogs to walk so it was a very very damp day 😬. Being damp all day makes for a long day. But now I’m comfy on the couch and about to read for a bit before dinner!⁣

A new Jenny Colgan book!!!! Thanks @tlcbooktours for sending me a copy! Ok not technically new since it was first published in the UK in 2006, but it's now coming to the US!! West End Girls features twins that set off to London to make their dreams come true.⁣
⁣
Penny and Lizzie may have almost nothing in common, but they both long for the excitement and possibilities of the big city. But when they are offered a chance to house sit in London, they start to realize this lifestyle may not be exactly what they expected.⁣
⁣
It's no secret that I absolutely adore every single book Jenny has written, so I'm beyond excited that there's a new one available to me now. Plus, I can't wait to visit London again so it'll be so much fun to read about places there. The US version comes out on Jan 5 so you can order it now and get it this Tuesday!!⁣

"Learning to stand in somebody else's shoes, to see through their eyes, that's how peace begins. And it's up to you to make that happen. Empathy is a quality of character that can change the world." - Barack Obama⁣

⁣
I've always considered myself to be a very sensitive and empathetic person, so when TLC Book Tours reached out to me and asked if I wanted to be on the book tour for Lynne Azarchi @lynneazarchi 's The Empathy Advantage, I was absolutely onboard.⁣
⁣
❤❤⁣
⁣
As a parent, this year has been more challenging. While I've loved having more time with my two little boys, the line between parent and educator has definitely blurred, and while I wish I could say that I've always been patient, empathetic, and understanding during this year's more stressful and taxing times, as a mom and human, I'm most definitely flawed, always learning, and perpetually a work in progress. And that's where this book has been so helpful!⁣
⁣
❤❤⁣
⁣
This book is "for the busiest parents, caregivers and educators. It provides tips, recommendations, online resources, and activities that are fun and engaging and take just about ten to twenty minutes," and it's written in an engaging and accessible way. From talking about being a good role model and the importance of being present and spending quality time with your child, to teaching the importance of standing up for yourself, active listening, and self-compassion, this book is a treasure trove of information that everyone can use at a time when empathy is so important and needed.⁣
⁣
❤❤⁣
⁣
Thank you so much to Lynne, Rowman & Littlefield, and TLC Book Tours for having me on this tour. Definitely check this book out; you'll be so glad you did!⁣

Ya’ll know that I love a good cozy mystery every now and then, but what you don’t know is that that love started with @elleryadams! The first cozy mystery I ever read was her novel The Secret, Book, & Scone Society (Book 1 in the Secret, Book, & Scone Society series)! Which is why I’m so excited to be featuring The Book of Candlelight today, Book 3 in that same series!
.
If you’re looking to try out a cozy mystery for the first time or already have a bunch of cozies under your reading belt, make sure you check out this series!
.
Sʏɴᴏᴘsɪs:
In the new Secret, Book, and Scone Society novel from New York Times bestselling author Ellery Adams, the rain in Miracle Springs, North Carolina, has been relentless—and a flood of trouble is about to be unleashed . . .

As the owner of Miracle Books, Nora Pennington figures all the wet weather this spring is at least good for business. The local inns are packed with stranded travelers, and among them Nora finds both new customers and a new friend, the sixtysomething Sheldon, who starts helping out at the store.

Since a little rain never hurt anyone, Nora rides her bike over to the flea market one sodden day and buys a bowl from Danny, a Cherokee potter. It’ll make a great present for Nora’s EMT boyfriend, but the next day, a little rain turns into a lot of rain, and the Miracle River overflows it banks. Amid the wreckage of a collapsed footbridge, Danny's body lies within the churning water.

Nora and the sheriff both doubt the ruling of accidental drowning, and Nora decides it’s time for the Secret, Book, and Scone Society to spring into action. When another body turns up, it becomes clearer that Danny’s death can’t be blamed on a natural disaster. A crucial clue may lie within the stone walls of the Inn of Mist and Roses: a diary, over a century old and spattered with candle wax, that leads Nora and her friends through a maze of intrigue—and onto the trail of a murderer . . .
.
Big thanks to @tlcbooktours, @elleryadams and @kensingtonbooks for the gifted copy!
