David Nicholls, author of Us: A Novel, on tour October/November 2014

September 30, 2014 By trish Leave a Comment

UsAbout Us: A Novel

• Hardcover: 416 pages
• Publisher: Harper (October 28, 2014)

David Nicholls brings the wit and intelligence that graced his enormously popular New York Times bestseller, One Day, to a compellingly human, deftly funny new novel about what holds marriages and families together—and what happens, and what we learn about ourselves, when everything threatens to fall apart.

Douglas Petersen may be mild-mannered, but behind his reserve lies a sense of humor that, against all odds, seduces beautiful Connie into a second date . . . and eventually into marriage. Now, almost three decades after their relationship first blossomed in London, they live more or less happily in the suburbs with their moody seventeen year-old son, Albie. Then Connie tells him she thinks she wants a divorce.

The timing couldn’t be worse. Hoping to encourage her son’s artistic interests, Connie has planned a month-long tour of European capitals, a chance to experience the world’s greatest works of art as a family, and she can’t bring herself to cancel. And maybe going ahead with the original plan is for the best anyway? Douglas is privately convinced that this landmark trip will rekindle the romance in the marriage, and might even help him to bond with Albie.

Narrated from Douglas’s endearingly honest, slyly witty, and at times achingly optimistic point of view, Us is the story of a man trying to rescue his relationship with the woman he loves, and learning how to get closer to a son who’s always felt like a stranger. Us is a moving meditation on the demands of marriage and parenthood, the regrets of abandoning youth for middle age, and the intricate relationship between the heart and the head. And in David Nicholls’s gifted hands, Douglas’s odyssey brings Europe—from the streets of Amsterdam to the famed museums of Paris, from the cafés of Venice to the beaches of Barcelona—to vivid life just as he experiences a powerful awakening of his own. Will this summer be his last as a husband, or the moment when he turns his marriage, and maybe even his whole life, around?

Praise for Us

“I loved this book. Funny, sad, tender: for anyone who wants to know what happens after the Happy Ever After.” —Jojo Moyes, author of Me Before You and One Plus One

“Nicholls brings his trademark wit and wisdom to this by turns hilarious and heartbreaking examination of a long-term marriage…. This tender novel will further cement Nicholls’ reputation as a master of romantic comedy.” —Booklist (starred review)

“From the author of One Day—which was infinitely better than the movie—comes a pathos-laden love story about marriage on the brink of collapse.” —Entertainment Weekly, “A Dozen Books We’re Dying to Read This Fall.”

⁣
Maya’s Notebook: Nineteen-year-old Maya Vidal grew up in a rambling old house in Berkeley with her grandmother Nini—a force of nature whose formidable strength helped her build a new life after she emigrated from Chile in 1973—and Popo, an African-American astronomer and professor whose solid, comforting presence helps calm the turbulence of Maya's adolescence. ⁣
⁣
When Popo dies of cancer, Maya comes undone and turns to drugs, alcohol, and petty crime. When she becomes lost in the dangerous underworld of Las Vegas, Maya becomes caught in the crosshairs of deadly warring forces. Her one chance for survival is Nini, who helps her escape to a remote island off the coast of Chile. Here, Maya tries to make sense of the past to discover the truth about her life and her family, and embarks on her greatest adventure: a journey of self-discovery and forgiveness.⁣
⁣
Ripper: Though they are as different as night and day, Indiana and Amanda Jackson have always shared a strong, mother-daughter bond. Beautiful and free-spirited, Indiana is a holistic healer. Teenage Amanda is a natural sleuth fascinated by the dark side of human nature like her father, the SFPD’s deputy chief of homicide. She also loves playing Ripper, an online mystery game.⁣
⁣
When a serial killer strikes San Francisco, the young amateur detective plunges into her own investigation. But the case becomes all too personal when Indiana vanishes. Could her mother’s disappearance be linked to the murders? With Indiana’s life on the line, Amanda must solve this perplexing mystery . . . before it’s too late.⁣

[partner] Thank you @tlcbooktours & @thomasnelson for the free copy of OLIVER!

I don’t feature my dogs on here often because it’s hard to get them to sit still. But when I’m doing a spotlight on a book with a dog, how could I not?! Trying to take photos today they were like, “mom why are you hiding treats behind that book? And you’re crazy if you think we’re sitting for them in the snow!” I didn’t want to be outside taking photos too long either; it’s cold here today!

Tell me about your dogs 🐶 And check out the synopsis below ↡

He Was Searching for a Lost Dog. He Found More Than He’d Ever Hoped For.

On Valentine’s Day 2019, someone stole Steven Carino’s dog, Oliver, from his car. Having lost his mother at thirteen and grown up with an alcoholic father, he could always count on his dogs for comfort and company. But now, with his beloved Oliver missing, Steven felt utterly alone.

Then, the miracle. In a series of near-impossible coincidences, people from different walks of life crossed paths with Oliver and with Steven. Hardworking immigrants, wealthy suburbanites, car mechanics, deli workers, old friends, close relatives, street cops, gang members, a TV news reporter, social media followers around the world, and one very gifted hairdresser all played a part in Steven’s desperate journey to find Oliver. In the middle of it all, Steven realized that no one is ever truly alone–and that the power of community can be life-changing.

Oliver is not just a book about a stolen dog. At its core, it’s a story about kindness, friendship, and the power of faith. As Steven says, “This is more than just a dog story. This is an everybody story. This is a love story.”

Happy Thursday everyone.⁣

I’m sliding in with a late post today. ⁣
⁣
But, I’ve got a Black story for the murder mystery fans out there! ⁣
⁣
Today, I’ve partnered with @tlcbooktours & @harpercollins360 to tell you about The Conjure-Man Dies by by Rudolph Fisher. ⁣
⁣
A unique crime classic: the very first detective novel written by an African-American, set in 1930s New York with only Black characters.⁣
⁣
When the body of N’Gana Frimbo, the African conjure-man, is discovered in his consultation room, Perry Dart, one of Harlem’s ten Black police detectives, is called in to investigate. Together with Dr Archer, a physician from across the street, Dart is determined to solve the baffling mystery, helped and hindered by Bubber Brown and Jinx Jenkins, local boys keen to clear themselves of suspicion of murder and undertake their own investigations.⁣
⁣
The Conjure-Man Dies was the very first detective novel written by an African-American. A distinguished doctor and accomplished musician and dramatist, Rudolph Fisher was one of the principal writers of the Harlem Renaissance, but died in 1934 aged only 37. With a gripping plot and vividly drawn characters, Fisher’s witty novel is a remarkable time capsule of one of the most exciting eras in the history of Black fiction.⁣
⁣
This crime classic is introduced by New York crime writer Stanley Ellin, and includes Rudolph Fisher’s last published story, ‘John Archer’s Nose’, in which Perry Dart and Dr Archer return to solve the case of a young man murdered in his own bed.⁣
⁣
💭 How about ask me a question today since I’m drawing blanks. ⁣

A haunting thriller about one woman’s journey into the painful truths threatening to destroy her.

Do you enjoy translated fiction? Or do you read it and not even realize it’s a novel originally written in another language? Some of my faves from last year weren’t written in English (i.e. Anxious People and The Eighth Life).
Check out this new WWII historical fiction from Italy: The Children’s Train.
•
•
Synopsis:

Based on true events, a heartbreaking story of love, family, hope, and survival set in post-World War II Italy—written with the heart of Orphan Train and Before We Were Yours—about poor children from the south sent to live with families in the north to survive deprivation and the harsh winters.

Though Mussolini and the fascists have been defeated, the war has devastated Italy, especially the south. Seven-year-old Amerigo lives with his mother Antonietta in Naples, surviving on odd jobs and his wits like the rest of the poor in his neighborhood. But one day, Amerigo learns that a train will take him away from the rubble-strewn streets of the city to spend the winter with a family in the north, where he will be safe and have warm clothes and food to eat.

Together with thousands of other southern children, Amerigo will cross the entire peninsula to a new life. Through his curious, innocent eyes, we see a nation rising from the ashes of war, reborn. As he comes to enjoy his new surroundings and the possibilities for a better future, Amerigo will make the heartbreaking choice to leave his mother and become a member of his adoptive family.

Amerigo’s journey is a moving story of memory, indelible bonds, artistry, and self-exploration, and a soaring examination of what family can truly mean. Ultimately Amerigo comes to understand that sometimes we must give up everything, even a mother’s love, to find our destiny.

BOOK FEATURE TOUR!📚
From the influential and ever-growing movement I Am Second, a remarkable collection of stories of people searching for and finding love.
When I Am Second launched in 2008, the organization intended simply to tell stories of lives changed utterly by people placing God first and themselves second. Although the organization has exploded in size and influence since, that original mission has remained the same--and continues to have enormous power and influence today. I Found Love is the highly anticipated new book from I Am Second, gathering together stories of people who searched everywhere for fulfillment and wholeness and found it only when they surrendered to God. People whose stories appear include the following, among others:

David and Tamela Mann
Jason Castro
Sean Lowe
Carrie Underwood
Stephen Baldwin
Moving, compelling, and profoundly inspiring, the stories found here remind us that our hearts will always be restless until they find their rest in God and always unsatisfied until we find the love of God.

Thank you so much to @tlcbooktours for including me on this fantastic tour for A CHILD LOST by @michellecoxwrites which is also available on audio!

About the book:

A spiritualist, an insane asylum, a lost little girl . . .

When Clive, anxious to distract a depressed Henrietta, begs Sergeant Frank Davis for a case, he is assigned to investigating a seemingly boring affair: a spiritualist woman operating in an abandoned schoolhouse on the edge of town who is suspected of robbing people of their valuables. What begins as an open and shut case becomes more complicated, however, when Henrietta―much to Clive’s dismay―begins to believe the spiritualist's strange ramblings.

Meanwhile, Elsie begs Clive and Henrietta to help her and the object of her budding love, Gunther, locate the whereabouts of one Liesel Klinkhammer, the German woman Gunther has traveled to America to find and the mother of the little girl, Anna, whom he has brought along with him. The search leads them to Dunning Asylum, where they discover some terrible truths about Liesel. When the child, Anna, is herself mistakenly admitted to the asylum after an epileptic fit, Clive and Henrietta return to Dunning to retrieve her. This time, however, Henrietta begins to suspect that something darker may be happening. When Clive doesn’t believe her, she decides to take matters into her own hands . . . with horrifying results.

✨Book Tour + Review✨Today is my stop on the tour for Beauty Among Ruins. I LOVED this one so much! It is the first physical book I have read in I can’t remember when, and let me tell you, I was excited to dive in and be within the walls of a Scottish castle and all of its history and learn everything along with Lily. Lily is an American socialite in 1914 who bucks tradition (just how I like my protagonists) and her parents send her overseas to live with her cousin Bertie as she is not quite falling in line like they think she should. As the Great War breaks out, she and Bertie head to Scotland to Kinclavoch Castle to provide help to soldiers that are triaged there. Lily is not really a nurse, and is not really well received, but worms her way into the hearts of most everyone there, including Alec, aka Lord Strathem who is the owner of said castle. But things are not as they seem, as she soon finds out, but by then, let’s just say it’s a little too hard for her to just up and go as some want her to do. Maybe she is more attached to the place (and a certain Lord) than she realizes?

This was absolutely fantastic, I was engaged from the start and took my time with this one, I loved every single thing about it. I loved the history, the atmosphere, and the cherry on top was the romance. It was all just so fantastically well done that I have nothing but great things to say about this book. I definitely want to read more historical fiction this year and this one was perfect to kick off the trend.

Thank you to @tlcbooktours @tnzfiction @jnellciesielski for the #gifted book to review. Synopsis in the comments.

"It is 1870 and Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence.⁣
..⁣
In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again been torn away from the only home she knows.⁣
..⁣
Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous. Johanna has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act “civilized.” Yet as the miles pass, the two lonely survivors tentatively begin to trust each other, forging a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this treacherous land.⁣
..⁣
Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. The captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle she does not remember—strangers who regard her as an unwanted burden. A respectable man, Captain Kidd is faced with a terrible choice: abandon the girl to her fate or become—in the eyes of the law—a kidnapper himself. Exquisitely rendered and morally complex, News of the World is a brilliant work of historical fiction that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust."

Synopsis: Chief Inspector Brian Leslie, a respected colleague of Ian Rutledge’s, is sent to Avebury, a village set inside a great prehistoric stone circle not far from Stonehenge.⁣
⁣
A young woman has been murdered next to a mysterious, hooded, figure-like stone, but no one recognizes her - or admits to it. And how did she get there? Despite a thorough investigation, it appears that her killer has simply vanished.⁣
⁣
Rutledge, returning from the conclusion of a case involving another apparently unknown woman, is asked to take a second look at Leslie’s inquiry, to see if he can identify this victim. But Rutledge is convinced Chief Superintendent Jameson only hopes to tarnish his earlier success once he also fails.⁣
⁣
Where to begin? He, too, finds very little to go on in Avebury, slowly widening his search beyond the village - only to discover that unlikely - possibly even unreliable - clues are pointing him toward an impossible solution, one that will draw the wrath of the Yard down on him, and very likely see him dismissed if he pursues it. But what about the victim - what does he owe this tragic woman? Where must his loyalty lie?⁣

#bookfeature 📚 If you’re looking for a unique LGBTQ Pride and Prejudice retelling to disappear into this weekend, The Heiress by @mollyjgreenley might be for you! I’m very excited to try this one, and I hear there’s a bit of WLW romance! 💜⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
🌿 Synopsis: As a fussy baby, Anne de Bourgh’s doctor prescribed laudanum to quiet her, and now the young woman must take the opium-heavy tincture every day. Growing up sheltered and confined, removed from sunshine and fresh air, the pale and overly slender Anne grew up with few companions except her cousins, including Fitzwilliam Darcy. Throughout their childhoods, it was understood that Darcy and Anne would marry and combine their vast estates of Pemberley and Rosings. But Darcy does not love Anne or want her.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
After her father dies unexpectedly, leaving her his vast fortune, Anne has a moment of clarity: what if her life of fragility and illness isn’t truly real? What if she could free herself from the medicine that clouds her sharp mind and leaves her body weak and lethargic? Might there be a better life without the medicine she has been told she cannot live without?⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
In a frenzy of desperation, Anne discards her laudanum and flees to the London home of her cousin, Colonel John Fitzwilliam, who helps her through her painful recovery. Yet once she returns to health, new challenges await. Shy and utterly inexperienced, the wealthy heiress must forge a new identity for herself, learning to navigate a “season” in society and the complexities of love and passion. The once wan, passive Anne gives way to a braver woman with a keen edge—leading to a powerful reckoning with the domineering mother determined to control Anne’s fortune . . . and her life.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
An extraordinary tale of one woman’s liberation, The Heiress reveals both the darkness and light in Austen’s world, with wit, sensuality, and a deeply compassionate understanding of the human heart.⁣⁣

✨ Book Feature ✨
The Children’s Train - Viola Ardone

Today’s feature is an emotional post-WWII story based on true events & set in Italy.

Synopsis: Though Mussolini and the fascists have been defeated, the war has devastated Italy, especially the south.

We can learn so much by studying animals Repost fr We can learn so much by studying animals Repost from @babygotbooks4life

Who doesn’t love animal behavior? Especially these days, to be honest, when the humans seem to be letting us down so…

I’m thrilled to be part of TLC’s book tour for Wild Rituals, in which author Caitlin O’Connell, PhD--a faculty member at Harvard Med School, behavioral ecologist & world-renowned elephant scientist as well an award-winning author who spent more than 30 years studying animals in the wild—dives into the rituals of elephants, apes, zebras, rhinos, lions, whales, flamingos & many more.

Wild Rituals explores how embracing the rituals of the animal kingdom can make us more connected to ourselves, nature, & others; if we better understand how we are similar to wild animals, we can find healing, self-awareness, community & self-reinvention. The book covers 10 different animal rituals & features full-color photos, from the Caribbean to the African savannah, as O’Connell documents her journeys into the desert, tundra & rainforest, revealing how animals can help us find a simpler, more meaningful way of life. We are actually profoundly similar to the wild creatures who captivate us & this remarkable book taps into the unspoken languages of creatures around the world.

In a culture of technology where we find ourselves living at a greater distance from nature & each other, this one is sure to help us see how to connect more deeply and meaningfully again.
