Family secrets can bind and destroy

Kate is ready to put her nomadic, city-dwelling past behind her when she marries Joe Krause and moves with him to the Iowa farm that has been in his family for more than 140 years. But life on the farm isn’t quite as idyllic as she’d hoped. It’s filled with chores, judgmental neighbors, and her mother-in-law, who—unbeknownst to Kate until after the wedding—will be living with them.

As Kate struggles to find her place in the small farming community, she begins to realize that her husband and his family are not who she thought they were. According to town gossip, the Krause family harbors a long-kept secret about a mysterious death that haunts Kate as a dangerous, unexplainable chain of events begins.

This immersive dive into the life and work of Salvador Dalí unlocks the secret of this creative genius and reveals for the first time how his erotically charged paintings changed the world of modern art.⁣

In this stunning volume, rich with more than 150 full-color images, noted art historians Jean-Pierre Isbouts and Christopher Heath Brown discuss the historical, social, and political conditions that shaped Dalí’s work, identify the impact of Modern as well as Old Master art, and present an unflinching view of the master’s personal relationships and motivations. With their deeply compelling narrative, Isbouts and Brown uncover how Dalí’s visual wit and enduring cult of personality still impacts fashion, literature, and art, from Andy Warhol to Lady Gaga, and seeks to answer why, in an age of shock and awe, Dalí’s art still manages to distress, perplex, and entertain.⁣
⁣
I'm so excited to add this gorgeous book to my home library collection.⁣

He wakes one morning to find that something has attacked one of his beehives, brutally killing every inhabitant. Heartbroken, he soon learns that a mysterious swarm of vicious hornets committed the mass murder—but where did they come from, and how can he stop them? If he is going to unravel this mystery and save his bees from annihilation, Sidi must venture out into the village and then brave the big city and beyond in search of answers.

Along the way, he discovers a country and a people turned upside down by their new post–Arab Spring reality as Islamic fundamentalists seek to influence votes any way they can on the eve of the country’s first democratic elections. To succeed in his quest, and find a glimmer of hope to protect all that he holds dear, Sidi will have to look further than he ever imagined.

This book was raw and real. Stewart crafted beautifully imperfect characters that allow us to see ourselves in their struggles.

Even the most put-together family, like the Flynn’s, can have a hidden secret!

This story follows Maggie as she navigates life after her husband’s death, and the life she experiences with her two best friends and her two daughters.

I spent the majority of the novel on the edge of my chair cheering for Maggie and her daughters.

This book also gives off what I’d consider Virgin River vibes, so if you like that series, grab this one and give it a try. I really need another book to come along and tell me what happens with the rest of their story!

There are several trigger warnings, so if you’re concerned, my DMs are always open and I will be honest before you jump into this one!

Thank you @mariah_stewart_books and @tlcbooktours for my #gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.

This book would make a lovely gift for a special religious occasion or for your own home library. Lots of books come into our home, and this is the first one my Pa took from the pile and placed in our living room. When I saw it there, he made a point to tell me not to give it away (he knows I’m generous with the amount of books I receive) and that it was stunning. If that isn’t a recommendation, I don’t know what is! It really is lovely and one I look forward to referencing often.⁣
⁣
Do you have a favorite religious tradition or story in your family? As much as I love Christmas, Easter and Resurrection Sunday is so special to me! I’m looking forward to it.⁣

Anyone who knows me knows I’ve seen almost every season of the bachelor. Ben Higgins was one of my favorite bachelors because of his kind nature and attitude! I also thought he had a really great group of women in his season. ⁣
⁣
Ben took his fame in another direction after the Bachelor. He felt that not many people knew the true Ben even though he put himself out there on the show. He threw himself into his charities, Generous Coffee and Humanity and Hope United. This book is a little more religious that I would have liked, but Ben turned to religion to help him find himself after the show aired. This definitely isn’t a Bachelor confession book, but it’s still very interesting to see what he’s done since the show.⁣

In this true love story that defies all odds, Josefine Lobnik, a Yugoslav partisan heroine, and Bruce Murray, a New Zealand soldier, discover love in the midst of a brutal war.⁣
⁣
In the heart of Nazi-occupied Europe, two people meet fleetingly in a chance encounter. One an underground resistance fighter, a bold young woman determined to vanquish the enemy occupiers; the other a prisoner of war, a man longing to escape the confines of the camp so he can battle again. A crumpled note passes between these two strangers, slipped through the wire of the compound, and sets them on a course that will change their lives forever.⁣
⁣
Woven through their tales of great bravery, daring escapes, betrayal, torture, and retaliation is their remarkable love story that survived against all odds. This is an extraordinary account of two ordinary people who found love during the unimaginable hardships of Hitler’s barbaric regime as told by their son-in-law Doug Gold, who decided to tell their story from the moment he heard about their remarkable tale of bravery, resilience, and resistance.⁣

✨ Happy Pub Day ✨

One of my biggest goals for 2021 is the highlight queer stories, and I’m so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to receive an early copy of I’M IN SEATTLE, WHERE ARE YOU? by Mortada Gzar. Just reading the synopsis, it already has me ready to bawl. 😭 I’m definitely going to be picking up this story for my April TBR—let me know if you plan to read it or if you have any other queer memoirs to send my way!

SYNOPSIS

An award-winning Iraqi writer creates a new world for himself in Seattle in search of lost love.
As the US occupation of Iraq rages, novelist Mortada Gzar, a student at the University of Baghdad, has a chance encounter with Morise, an African American soldier. It’s love at first sight, a threat to them both, and a moment of self-discovery. Challenged by society’s rejection and Morise’s return to the US, Mortada takes to the page to understand himself.
In his deeply affecting memoir, Mortada interweaves tales of his childhood work as a scrap-metal collector in a war zone and the indignities faced by openly gay artists in Iraq with his impossible love story and journey to the US. Marginalized by his own society, he is surprised to discover the racism he finds in a new one. At its heart, I’m in Seattle, Where Are You? is a moving tale of love and resilience.

Happy Wednesday everyone! Today I'm happy to be participating in the @TLCBookTours book for for The Windsor knot by S.J. Bennett. Thank you to @WilliamMorrowBooks and @HarperAudio for the complimentary copies of this title.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
One sentence review: A classic mystery with Queen Elizabeth as the lead sleuth - what's not to love?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I've always been a fan of a good mystery. So when I read the synopsis of this one and saw that Queen Elizabeth is the protagonist, I knew this was a book I needed to read. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The book is set in 2016 before the Queen's 90th birthday celebration. A guest at Windsor Castle, a young Russian pianist, is found strangled. As MI5 gets involved, the Queen finds herself increasingly frustrated with the direction the investigation is going in. And so the fun begins.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For me this book delivered everything I wanted: respectful behind the scenes fiction on what life as the Queen might look like, interesting characters, and most importantly an interesting mystery that kept me guessing.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I recommend this book for people who love a classic mystery or who love everything royal. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I was also lucky enough to get an alc for this book. I thought the narration was done really well. There are a lot of characters but the narrator did a good job in keeping them distinct so there wasn't a lot of confusion.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This book is available now!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is Book 4 of #BGBReviewMadness with @bookgoalbusters !⁣⁣
⁣⁣
QOTD: How do you feel about fiction that involves real life, living characters?⁣⁣
AOTD: I'm okay with it as long as they don't delve too deeply into historic events where it sort of muddles real history with fiction.⁣⁣

What's your favorite recent book cover?⁣
☠⁣
Thank you @harpervoyagerus and @tlcbooktours for sending me a copy of The Bone Maker by @sarahbethdurst! This cover was my most recent favorite!⁣
I receive a lot of books each month and every once in a while my husband comments on how much he likes the cover of one. This book was one of them. I very much agree.⁣
☠⁣
Synopsis:⁣
Twenty-five years ago, five heroes risked their lives to defeat the bone maker Eklor—a corrupt magician who created an inhuman army using animal bones. But victory came at a tragic price. Only four of the heroes survived. ⁣
⁣
Since then, Kreya, the group’s leader, has exiled herself to a remote tower and devoted herself to one purpose: resurrecting her dead husband. But such a task requires both a cache of human bones and a sacrifice—for each day he lives, she will live one less.⁣
⁣
She’d rather live one year with her husband than a hundred without him, but using human bones for magic is illegal in Vos. The dead are burned—as are any bone workers who violate the law. Yet Kreya knows where she can find the bones she needs: the battlefield where her husband and countless others lost their lives.⁣
⁣
But defying the laws of the land exposes a terrible possibility. Maybe the dead don’t rest in peace after all. ⁣
⁣
Five warriors—one broken, one gone soft, one pursuing a simple life, one stuck in the past, and one who should be dead. Their story should have been finished. But evil doesn’t stop just because someone once said, “the end.”

Everybody Fights, So Why Not Get Better At It!
Kim and Penn Holderness

Happy Pub Day to this book!! I want to thank @thomasnelson @theholdernessfamily and @tlcbooktours for having me on this tour and to get the opportunity to review their new book Everybody Fights.

I really did enjoy the audiobook version of this book and want a physical copy. I think it would be helpful for me to have both as there are parts where they encourage you to jot notes for you to think about or activities for the couple to do.

The audiobook version played more like a podcast and I think that keeps the tone more upbeat and it moves quickly. There are many personal stories that the reader can relate to.

Some of my favorite chapters and or take always were the “secret contracts” and “don’t leave the airport”. These are two aspects I struggle with so they gave me great practical advice.

The Holderness family does not claim to be experts on relationships or communication in this book. They take the lessons they have learned over the years and pass them along to the reader. I appreciated it, I found value where I needed to. Marriage is messy and we can always use a tune up and take away something to help us with personal growth.

I will say that there is some Christian marketing to this book and there is absolutely nothing Christian about the book. There are a few cuss words and no scripturei to be found. Not this this book is bad at all, just wanting to make sure people are aware.

Overall I really enjoyed this book ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 💫 .

Thank you for the gifted copy @tnzfiction @tea_cooper @tlcbooktours.

What is your earliest memory? I can remember a few events from when I was 3 years old. I've often wondered why we remember some things more clearly than others. And it is interesting how we can suppress memories of trauma for years, until something triggers us to remember. Suppressed memories play a part in this novel providing an element of mystery to this unique historical fiction. When a painting triggers a dramatic response from Elizabeth Quinn, snippets of suppressed memories undermine everything she knows about her life.  Dual timelines are effectively used to help unravel the secrets from the past. The author vividly brings post-colonial Australia to life, making this an atmospheric read. I paired the audiobook with my copy and found myself binge listening to this engaging, enjoyable novel. Australia is always a great armchair travel destination.

Cover synopsis:

A young prodigy in need of family. A painting that shatters a woman’s peace. And a decades-old mystery demanding to be solved.
Australia, 1906
Orphan Jane Piper is nine years old when philanthropist siblings Michael and Elizabeth Quinn take her into their home to further her schooling. The Quinns are no strangers to hardship— having arrived in Australia as penniless immigrants, they now care for others as lost as they once were.
Despite Jane’s mysterious past, her remarkable aptitude for mathematics takes her far over the next seven years, and her relationship with Elizabeth and Michael flourishes as she plays an increasingly prominent part in their business.
But when Elizabeth reacts in terror to an exhibition at the local gallery, Jane realizes no one knows Elizabeth after all—not even Elizabeth herself. As the past and the present converge and Elizabeth’s grasp on reality loosens, Jane sets out to unravel Elizabeth’s story before it is too late.
From the gritty reality of the Australian goldfields to the grand institutions of Sydney, this compelling novel takes us on a mystery across continents and decades as both women finally discover a place to call hom

Genre: Historical Mystery
Author: Jess Montgomery
Published By: Minotaur Books

Synopsis:
Ohio, 1927: Moonshining is a way of life in rural Bronwyn County, and even the otherwise upstanding Sheriff Lily Ross has been known to turn a blind eye when it comes to stills in the area. But when thirteen-year-old Jebediah Ranklin almost dies after drinking tainted moonshine, Lily knows that someone has gone too far, and–with the help of organizer and moonshiner Marvena Whitcomb–is determined to find out who.

But then, Lily’s nemesis, the businessman George Vogel, reappears in town with his new wife, Fiona. Along with them is also her former brother-in-law Luther Ross, now an agent for the newly formed Bureau of Prohibition. To Lily, it seems too much of a coincidence that they should arrive now.

As fall turns to winter, a blizzard closes in. Lily starts to peel back the layers of deception shrouding the town of Kinship, but soon she discovers that many around her seem to be betraying those they hold dear–and that Fiona too may have an agenda of her own.

Wow. Just Wow. I really, really loved this book! Chip Gaines wrote this book to inspire & motivate me. I know, I know…that’s not really true, but sometimes when you read a book, it feels like the author was thinking of how to motivate you, and that’s how this one felt to me.

Thank you to @thomasnelson & @harperaudio for my gifted audio copy of 𝙉𝙤 𝙋𝙖𝙞𝙣, 𝙉𝙤 𝙂𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙂𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙎𝙩𝙪𝙛𝙛 𝘿𝙤𝙚𝙨𝙣'𝙩 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙀𝙖𝙨𝙮 by @chipgaines & @tlcbooktours for having me on this tour!

I haven’t watched Fixer Upper, so I wasn’t drawn to this because of the show, I was drawn to it because of the blurb about hard work. It sounded interesting. But it’s not just interesting, it’s filled with commentary that really made me pause and think about my life and the way I am living it.

This is NOT a book about how to succeed in business. This is a book about how to take your life by the horns and live it to its fullest. It’s the only one you’ve got, so get everything you can out of it. It’s an absolutely amazing book, and I cannot explain just how much I loved it!

I listened to the audio of this book, and I highly recommend it. Chip narrates, but it’s not just him! His parents and his wife speak. He really brought his whole network into the book, which is what he’s talking about in the book. Your network is there to support you, and you for them. It’s amazingly done!

Happy Publication Day! I love when historical fiction is based on real individuals. The novel is a fictionalized account of the author's in-laws experience during WW2. A quick peek at the author's website revealed a lot of supplemental photos and correspondence between Bruce, a POW from New Zealand, and Josefine, a Slovene resistance fighter. I'm looking forward to this one. Here's the publisher's synopsis:⁣
This is an extraordinary account of two ordinary people who found love during the unimaginable hardships of Hitler’s barbaric regime as told by their son-in-law Doug Gold, who decided to tell their story from the moment he heard about their remarkable tale of bravery, resilience, and resistance. ⁣
