January 21, 2012 By trish Leave a Comment

To celebrate the release of Jacqueline Winspear’s Elegy for Eddie, we’re planning a blog tour for the whole Maisie Dobbs series.

Here’s the schedule for the tour:
March 5th – 9th – The first six books in the Maisie Dobbs series
March 12th – 16th – The Mapping of Love and Death
March19th – 23rd – A Lesson in Secrets
March 26th – 30th – Elegy for Eddie

March 5th – March 9th

About Maisie Dobbs

Maisie Dobbs, Psychologist and Investigator, began her working life at the age of thirteen as a servant in a Belgravia mansion, only to be discovered reading in the library by her employer, Lady Rowan Compton. Fearing dismissal, Maisie is shocked when she discovers that her thirst for education is to be supported by Lady Rowan and a family friend, Dr. Maurice Blanche. But The Great War intervenes in Maisie’s plans, and soon after commencement of her studies at Girton College, Cambridge, Maisie enlists for nursing service overseas. Years later, in 1929, having apprenticed to the renowned Maurice Blanche, a man revered for his work with Scotland Yard, Maisie sets up her own business. Her first assignment, a seemingly tedious inquiry involving a case of suspected infidelity, takes her not only on the trail of a killer, but back to the war she had tried so hard to forget.

About Birds of a Feather

An eventful year has passed for Maisie Dobbs. Since starting a one-woman private investigation agency in 1929 London, she now has a professional office in Fitzroy Square and an assistant, the happy-go-lucky Billy Beale. She has proven herself as a psychologist and investigator, and has even won over Detective Inspector Stratton of Scotland Yard’s Murder Squad—an admirable achievement for a woman who worked her way from servant to scholar to sleuth, and who also served as a battlefield nurse in the Great War.

It’s now the early Spring of 1930. Stratton is investigating a murder case in Coulsden, while Maisie has been summoned to Dulwich to find a runaway heiress. The woman is the daughter of Joseph Waite, a wealthy self-made man who has lavished her with privilege but kept her in a gilded cage. His domineering ways have driven her off before, and now she’s bolted again.

About Pardonable Lies

In the third novel of this unique and masterly crime series, a deathbed plea from his wife leads Sir Cecil Lawton, KC, to seek the aid of Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator. As Maisie soon learns, Agnes Lawton never accepted that her aviator son was killed in the Great War, a torment that led her not only to the edge of madness but also to the doors of those who practice the dark arts and commune with the spirit world. Determined to prove Ralph Lawton either dead or alive, Maisie is plunged into a case that tests her spiritual strength, as well as her regard for her mentor, Maurice Blanche. The mission will bring her to France and reunite her with her old friend Priscilla Evernden, who lost three brothers in the war, one of whom has an intriguing connection to the case.

Set against a finely drawn portrait of life between the World Wars, Pardonable Lies is “a thrilling mystery that will enthrall fans of Jacqueline Winspear’s heroine and likely win her new ones” (Detroit Free Press).

About Messenger of Truth

London, 1931. The night before an exhibition of his artwork opens at a famed Mayfair gallery, the controversial artist Nick Bassington-Hope falls to his death. The police rule it an accident, but Nick’s twin sister, Georgina, a wartime journalist and a infamous figure in her own right, isn’t convinced.

When the authorities refuse to consider her theory that Nick was murdered, Georgina seeks out a fellow graduate from Girton College, Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator, for help. Nick was a veteran of World War I, and before long the case leads Maisie to the desolate beaches of Dungeness in Kent, and into the sinister underbelly of the city’s art world.

About An Incomplete Revenge

With the country in the grip of economic malaise, Maisie Dobbs is relieved to accept an apparently straightforward assignment to investigate a potential land purchase. Her inquiries take her to a picturesque village in Kent during the hop-picking season, but beneath its pastoral surface she finds evidence that something is amiss. Mysterious fires erupt in the village with alarming regularity, and a series of petty crimes suggest a darker criminal element at work. A peculiar secrecy shrouds the village, and ultimately Maisie must draw on her finely-honed skills of detection to solve one of her most intriguing cases yet.

About Among the Mad

Christmas Eve, 1931. On the way to see a client, Maisie Dobbs witnesses a man commit suicide on a busy London street. The following day, the Prime Minister’s office receives a letter threatening a massive loss of life if certain demands are not met—and the writer mentions Maisie by name. Tapped by Scotland Yard’s elite Special Branch to be a special adviser on the case, Maisie is soon involved in a race against time to find a man who proves he has the knowledge and will to inflict destruction on thousands of innocent people.

In Among the Mad, Jacqueline Winspear combines a heart-stopping story with a rich evocation of a fascinating period to create her most compelling and satisfying novel yet.

March 12th – 16th

About The Mapping of Love and Death

August 1914. As Michael Clifton is mapping land he has just purchased in California’s beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, war is declared in Europe—and duty-bound to his father’s native country, the young cartographer soon sets sail for England to serve in the British army. Three years later, he is listed as missing in action.

April 1932. After Michael’s remains are unearthed in France, his parents retain London psychologist and investigator Maisie Dobbs, hoping she can find the unnamed nurse whose love letters were among their late son’s belongings. It is a quest that leads Maisie back to her own bittersweet wartime love—and to the stunning discovery that Michael Clifton was murdered in his dugout. Suddenly an exposed web of intrigue and violence threatens to ensnare the dead soldier’s family and even Maisie herself as she attempts to cope with the impending loss of her mentor and the unsettling awareness that she is once again falling in love.

March 19th – 23rd

About A Lesson in Secrets

In the summer of 1932, the career of psychologist and investigator Maisie Dobbs takes an exciting new turn when she accepts an undercover assignment from the British Secret Service. Sent to pose as a junior lecturer at a private college in Cambridge, she will monitor any activities “not in the interests of His Majesty’s government.”

When the college’s controversial pacifist founder, Greville Liddicote, is murdered, however, Maisie is directed to stand back as her colleagues in Scotland Yard spearhead the investigation. But she soon discovers that the circumstances of Liddicote’s death appear inextricably linked to the suspicious comings and goings of faculty members and students under her surveillance. To unravel this web, the investigator must overcome a reluctant Secret Service, discover shameful hidden truths about Britain’s conduct during the Great War, and face off against the rising power of the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei—the Nazi Party—as the storm clouds of World War II gather on the horizon.

March 26th – 30th

The meet-cute award goes to dog groomer Juliet Nolan. ⁣
⁣
It’s one of Hollywood’s biggest nights when she volunteers as a seat filler and winds up next to movie heartthrob Noah freaking Douglas. ⁣
⁣
Tongue tied and toes curling in her pink Converse, she pretends that she doesn’t have a clue who he is. It’s the only way to keep from swooning.⁣
⁣
She’s pretty and unpretentious, loves his dog, and is not a worshipping fan. No way Noah’s giving up on her, even if his affectionate pursuit comes with a bump: Juliet has a pathological fear of kissing and the disappointments that follow. ⁣

Patient, empathetic, and carrying personal burdens of his own, Noah suggests a remedy: they rehearse.⁣

The guards come down. But there’s another hitch they weren’t betting on. As for that cue-the-orchestra-and-roll-credits happy ending? It might take more than practice to make it perfect.⁣

✨This book was steeped in Southern culture, racism, and the well meaning white folks who unfortunately are equally blind. I found myself tickled by Opal’s internal monologue. Happy book birthday to Freeing Jesus by Diana Butler Bass! Thank you to @harperonebooks and @tlcbooktours for my gifted copy.⁣
⁣
I was so excited to start this one last night. The author considers it “memoir theology,” using her personal faith story to share how she knows Jesus. I love this type of memoir.⁣
⁣
In Freeing Jesus, Bass challenges the idea that Jesus can only be understood in static, one-dimensional ways and asks us to instead consider a life where Jesus grows with us and helps us through life’s challenges in several capacities: as Friend, Teacher, Savior, Lord, Way, and Presence.⁣
⁣
Freeing Jesus is an invitation to leave the religious wars behind and rediscover Jesus in all his many manifestations, to experience Jesus beyond the narrow confines we have built around him. It renews our hope in faith and worship at a time when we need it most.⁣
⁣
This is a perfect book to read this Holy Week. I know one way Jesus has been present throughout my life is as Healer, and for that I’m so grateful.⁣

You are probably wondering how myself, a 26 year old very single female, ended up with a book about having sex when you are over the age of 50? I know, it seems a bit weird. But when the opportunity to do a book tour came along, I knew I wanted to participate.⁣
•⁣
If anyone knows me, they know that one of my favorite sub genres of books to read include nonfiction/self help books related to having sex, having safe sex, finding sexual partners, masturbation, sex toys, STD’s, exploring outside of vanilla sex, etc. Any sort of topic related to sexual education of sorts really makes my heart happy. So when I learned about this new book, I wanted to get my hands on it.⁣
•⁣
I know that a good chunk of this beauty isn’t going to relate to me, but I also know that I WANT to have the chance to read it. “Great Sex Starts at 50” by Tracey Cox (@traceycoxsexauthor), has some bits and pieces that really speak to me.⁣
These include-⁣
1. Chapter 1: “Four Things That Will Revolutionize Your Sex Life”⁣
2. Chapter 3: “But I Don’t Feel Sexy Anymore”⁣
3. Chapter 5: “I Love My Partner But I Don’t Want To Have Sex With Them Anymore”⁣
4. Chapter 6: “Women Don’t Have Low Libidos, We Are Bored”⁣
5. Chapter 8: “Why Sex Toys Can Solve Most Of Your Problems”⁣
•⁣
I am hoping that this beauty lives up to some of the other sex related books I have read in the past. I would love to have them share their bookshelf space together🤞🏼

Women’s fiction at it’s best! I’m always a sucker for books about small towns, friendship, and second chances. An Invincible Summer is the start of a new series that gave me all of that and more. I was immediately sucked into the story about a widow who moves back to her small town with her grown daughters and reconnects with her high school friends. The book is filled with friendship, forgiveness, family, and a fresh start. ⁣
⁣
“𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥. 𝘍𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥. 𝘓𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘥.”⁣
⁣
I really enjoyed this author’s writing style. It felt like chatting with an old friend. The story is relatable and engaging and the author really taps into the dynamics of friendships and family. I moved during pivotal years, so I don’t have these kinds of deep seeded, generational friendships but I’m always drawn to them in books. ⁣

QOTD: Are you still in contact with your high school friends?

His & Hers by Alice Feeney ✨⁣
⁣
This book has been on my list forever and I was so excited when @tlcbooktours asked me to participate in @flatiron_books’s tour - thanks so much for the #gifted copy! I love a psychological thriller full of twists and turns, and this truly sounds like the *perfect* suspenseful thriller. I just know I’m not going to be able to put it down. AND Jessica Chastain optioned the TV rights, so gotta read it before the eventual show!⁣
⁣
SYNOPSIS: “There are two sides to every story: yours and mine, ours and theirs, His & Hers. Which means someone is always lying. When a woman is murdered in Blackdown, a quintessentially British village, newsreader Anna Andrews is reluctant to cover the case. Detective Jack Harper is suspicious of her involvement, until he becomes a suspect in his own murder investigation. Someone isn’t telling the truth, and some secrets are worth killing to keep. His & Hers is a twisty, smart, psychological thriller. A gripping tale of suspense, told by expertly-drawn narrators that will keep readers guessing until the very end.”⁣

Liam Murphy is a venture capitalist with something to prove. When he learns that his inheritance is contingent on being married, he realizes his best friend's little sister has the perfect solution to his problem. A marriage of convenience will get Daisy's matchmaking relatives off her back and fulfill the terms of his late grandfather's will. If only he hadn’t broken her tender teenage heart nine years ago…⁣
⁣
Sparks fly when Daisy and Liam go on a series of dates to legitimize their fake relationship. Too late, they realize that very little is convenient about their arrangement. History and chemistry aren't about to follow the rules of this engagement.

#promo @tlcbooktours ✨ It's a two post kind of day (who am I?!) but I'm here to tell you about a book in translation from award winning Tunisian author, Yamen Manali.

It's about bees! We're big bee lovers in my family (though thats not our honey 😅) so I find the plot of this to be pretty compelling.

"Sidi lives a hermetic life as a bee whisperer, tending to his beloved “girls” on the outskirts of the desolate North African village of Nawa. He wakes one morning to find that something has attacked one of his beehives, brutally killing every inhabitant. Heartbroken, he soon learns that a mysterious swarm of vicious hornets committed the mass murder—but where did they come from, and how can he stop them? If he is going to unravel this mystery and save his bees from annihilation, Sidi must venture out into the village and then brave the big city and beyond in search of answers.

Along the way, he discovers a country and a people turned upside down by their new post–Arab Spring reality as Islamic fundamentalists seek to influence votes any way they can on the eve of the country’s first democratic elections. To succeed in his quest, and find a glimmer of hope to protect all that he holds dear, Sidi will have to look further than he ever imagined.

In this brilliantly accessible modern-day parable, Yamen Manai uses a masterful blend of humor and drama to reveal what happens in a country shaken by revolutionary change after the world stops watching."

Sounds so good - and at only 174 pages, I imagine it'll fly by! This one is out now, and thanks always to @tlcbooktours for partnering with me. 🐝

If you'd like a copy, just leave a comment and tag a friend in the comments! US only - I'll close this Sunday 4/18.

Classical guitarist Satoshi Makino has toured the world and is at the height of his career when he first lays eyes on journalist Yoko Komine. Their bond forms instantly.⁣
⁣
Upon their first meeting, after Makino’s concert in Tokyo, they begin a conversation that will go on for years, with long spells of silence broken by powerful moments of connection.
⁣
Will their connection endure, weaving them back together like instruments in a symphony, or will fate lead them apart?⁣

Started reading this book and the writing is so beautiful like a very well composed piece that captured my heart. Meant to be read slowly, this is simply pure joy for me. I’m missing Tokyo even more! ⁣

✨BOOK FEATURE✨

Thank you so much to @tlcbooktours for including me on this tour and sending me a copy of THE WOMAN WITH THE BLUE STAR by @pamjenoff which is due to be released on 5/4! I can't wait to read it!

What is your favorite time period to read/learn about?

Mine is Early American but I mostly read and enjoy historicals set during WWII!

About the book:

1942. Sadie Gault is eighteen and living with her parents amid the horrors of the Kraków Ghetto during World War II. When the Nazis liquidate the ghetto, Sadie and her pregnant mother are forced to seek refuge in the perilous sewers beneath the city. One day Sadie looks up through a grate and sees a girl about her own age buying flowers.

Ella Stepanek is an affluent Polish girl living a life of relative ease with her stepmother, who has developed close alliances with the occupying Germans. Scorned by her friends and longing for her fiancé, who has gone off to war, Ella wanders Kraków restlessly. While on an errand in the market, she catches a glimpse of something moving beneath a grate in the street. Upon closer inspection, she realizes it’s a girl hiding.

Ella begins to aid Sadie and the two become close, but as the dangers of the war worsen, their lives are set on a collision course that will test them in the face of overwhelming odds. Inspired by harrowing true stories, The Woman with the Blue Star is an emotional testament to the power of friendship and the extraordinary strength of the human will to survive.

♥️ Lovely Book Review ♥️ A historical fiction beauty, The Venice Sketchbook is one of my favorites so far this year!

This has history, mystery, romance, and dual timelines done right. And Venice, I adore you and I need to visit ♥️

Today's #TLCToursTuesday and this is a book I've been anticipating for months. A women's fiction wrapped in a journey of self discovery and families ties between two women, set before WW2 and after 9/11.

The Venice Sketchbook
By Rhys Bowen
Available Now!

L O V E D:
♥️ Oh the history of this book is so charming. I want to be in Venice and experience the vibrance and art that created the city.
♥️ So as some of you know I am not always a fan of duel timelines but I am when it's done right - and Rhys Bowen got it right! I felt that the transition between stories was flawless and we'll paced. Beautifully written.
♥️ The love story through this book is not only a romance between a man and woman, but a love letter to Venice and of self love and discovery.
♥️ I loved the mystery throughout the book, kept me wanting to turn the page!!

F A V. Q U O T E:
"Then you are right to stay," she said.
"You cannot live someone else's life. Your life is what you make of it. You have to decide what you want."

So so good this book is available now!! Historical fiction fans be sure to check it out!!

Thank you @tlcbooktours @harpercollins for including me on the tour of When Stars Rain Down by @angelajacksonbrownauthor
🖤🤍

👉🏽Review👈🏽
The author is a playwright and poet which is evident in her words.

The story takes place in 1936 Parsons, Georgia. Opal Pruitt, who is just shy of 18 is being raised by her grandmother. We get to know and love Opal and the village that is raising her. They live on the “colored” side of a racially divided town.

When the klan threatens their community, it is both emotional and suspenseful.
In the midst of it all, Opal is experiencing her first love with the bad boy and PK kid Cedric.

It was easy to be invested in the story and the characters in this story. There were tough scenes of racism and the violence that comes with it. If you like historical fiction, southern stories or just a great read pick this one up! 4/12 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ .5

What was your last emotional read?

Some of my reading goals for 2021 include reading more Queer stories, more Own-Voice authors, more nonfiction, and more translated books and I'm in Seattle, Where Are You by Mortada Gzar encompasses all of them. This memoir is a moving tale about identity, loss, family, love, and the strength of the human spirit. A definite must read!

Are you a reader of memories? I didn't always use to be a fan but the older I get the more I want to know how others have lived their lives. How their story went because half the time I don't know where I'm going or what I'm supposed to be doing. Is that weird? I hope not.

The synopsis is available in the comments. I hope you check this beautiful book out.

A big thanks to @tlcbooktours @tlcdiversity and @amazonpublishing for sending this lovely book my way *partners ##diversereads #ownvoicesbooks #humansofbookstagram #bookrecs #bookreviews #booksofinstagram #bookclubofinstagram #bookaddict #workspaceinspo

Feature // a giant thank you to @tlcbooktours and @thomasnelson and, of course, @theholdernessfamily for my copy of this book which is one of my most anticipated reads!

What do you do to work on your relationship?

When our girls were little we were so busy driving them to soccer, gymnastics, tennis, dance, ice skating, friends’ houses…it seemed like we were two ships passing in the night and we hardly ever connected. As long as those days seem at the time, they don’t last forever and now that our girls are in college, Jason and I have been able to have more date nights - even if it’s a Covid dinner in the dining room while the girls eat in their bedrooms.

After nearly 25 years of marriage we know each other’s triggers and we accept and work with them, which means that we don’t fight as much as we used to. But we both have very different styles of fighting. Jason gets quiet and retreats, sometimes even leaves and goes to a friend’s house; I, on the other hand, have a temper and want to scream and yell and him leaving mid-fight really just ups the ante for me and makes me furious. So when I heard that @theholdernessfamily had a book about fighting -which is really a book about how to better communicate with your partner - I knew I wanted to read it!

One chapter in and I asked my husband if he would read it with me. We have both read and discussed the first two chapters. I took notes and he made a “cheat sheet” to help us remember some of their tips for communicating what you want and need from your partner.

What is your fighting style? Do you yell and scream? Or do you get quiet and leave? Do you and your partner know each other’s triggers and avoid them?

Raise your hand if you're a Chip & Jo fan or a fan of the Magnolia brand! ⁣
⁣
I definitely am. I've watched Fixer Upper, visited the Silos and shop the Magnolia brand at Target. ⁣
⁣
When we visited the Silos last year, I noticed there was a whole store dedicated to Chip's recommendations and favorites and his book was featured. I knew I'd want to read it sometime, so was delighted when @tlcbooktours reached out with a chance.⁣
⁣
In this book, Chips shares about how networks are essential for building anything - and by networks, we mean your own home team or community. Chip & Jo have been successfully flipping houses for years, hosting a TV show and creating products, but when they went to build their own tv network, they realized it would not come easy. ⁣
⁣
According to Chip, if you want a network that will pull you into a life of meaning, a life of joy and connection, you need to be intentional about choosing the people in it. People who are enlivened and electrified by the power of living according to their purpose, who are always in pursuit of lifelong learning, and who have a sincere belief that relationships are more than transactions. Chip Gaines has been building that kind of network his whole life, and he can tell you, it doesn’t come easy.⁣
⁣
To say it requires sweat equity would be an understatement. It requires faith in people. It requires hope. And it requires a willingness to grow even when it hurts. From hard-won lessons and personal stories from Chip, No Pain, No Gaines is a by-the-bootstraps manual for building a network you can count on.⁣
