✨BOOK FEATURE✨

Thank you so much to @tlcbooktours for including me on this tour and sending me a copy of THE WOMAN WITH THE BLUE STAR by @pamjenoff which is due to be released on 5/4! I can't wait to read it!

What is your favorite time period to read/learn about?

Mine is Early American but I mostly read and enjoy historicals set during WWII!

About the book:

1942. Sadie Gault is eighteen and living with her parents amid the horrors of the Kraków Ghetto during World War II. When the Nazis liquidate the ghetto, Sadie and her pregnant mother are forced to seek refuge in the perilous sewers beneath the city. One day Sadie looks up through a grate and sees a girl about her own age buying flowers.

Ella Stepanek is an affluent Polish girl living a life of relative ease with her stepmother, who has developed close alliances with the occupying Germans. Scorned by her friends and longing for her fiancé, who has gone off to war, Ella wanders Kraków restlessly. While on an errand in the market, she catches a glimpse of something moving beneath a grate in the street. Upon closer inspection, she realizes it’s a girl hiding.

Ella begins to aid Sadie and the two become close, but as the dangers of the war worsen, their lives are set on a collision course that will test them in the face of overwhelming odds. Inspired by harrowing true stories, The Woman with the Blue Star is an emotional testament to the power of friendship and the extraordinary strength of the human will to survive.

L O V E D:
♥️ Oh the history of this book is so charming. I want to be in Venice and experience the vibrance and art that created the city.
♥️ So as some of you know I am not always a fan of duel timelines but I am when it's done right - and Rhys Bowen got it right! I felt that the transition between stories was flawless and we'll paced. Beautifully written.
♥️ The love story through this book is not only a romance between a man and woman, but a love letter to Venice and of self love and discovery.
♥️ I loved the mystery throughout the book, kept me wanting to turn the page!!

👉🏽Review👈🏽
The author is a playwright and poet which is evident in her words.

The story takes place in 1936 Parsons, Georgia. Opal Pruitt, who is just shy of 18 is being raised by her grandmother. We get to know and love Opal and the village that is raising her. They live on the “colored” side of a racially divided town.

When the klan threatens their community, it is both emotional and suspenseful.
In the midst of it all, Opal is experiencing her first love with the bad boy and PK kid Cedric.

It was easy to be invested in the story and the characters in this story. There were tough scenes of racism and the violence that comes with it. If you like historical fiction, southern stories or just a great read pick this one up! 4/12 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ .5

What was your last emotional read?

Some of my reading goals for 2021 include reading more Queer stories, more Own-Voice authors, more nonfiction, and more translated books and I'm in Seattle, Where Are You by Mortada Gzar encompasses all of them. This memoir is a moving tale about identity, loss, family, love, and the strength of the human spirit. A definite must read!

Are you a reader of memories? I didn't always use to be a fan but the older I get the more I want to know how others have lived their lives. How their story went because half the time I don't know where I'm going or what I'm supposed to be doing. Is that weird? I hope not.

The synopsis is available in the comments. I hope you check this beautiful book out.

A big thanks to @tlcbooktours @tlcdiversity and @amazonpublishing for sending this lovely book my way *partners ##diversereads #ownvoicesbooks #humansofbookstagram #bookrecs #bookreviews #booksofinstagram #bookclubofinstagram #bookaddict #workspaceinspo

Feature // a giant thank you to @tlcbooktours and @thomasnelson and, of course, @theholdernessfamily for my copy of this book which is one of my most anticipated reads!

What do you do to work on your relationship?

When our girls were little we were so busy driving them to soccer, gymnastics, tennis, dance, ice skating, friends’ houses…it seemed like we were two ships passing in the night and we hardly ever connected. As long as those days seem at the time, they don’t last forever and now that our girls are in college, Jason and I have been able to have more date nights - even if it’s a Covid dinner in the dining room while the girls eat in their bedrooms.

After nearly 25 years of marriage we know each other’s triggers and we accept and work with them, which means that we don’t fight as much as we used to. But we both have very different styles of fighting. Jason gets quiet and retreats, sometimes even leaves and goes to a friend’s house; I, on the other hand, have a temper and want to scream and yell and him leaving mid-fight really just ups the ante for me and makes me furious. So when I heard that @theholdernessfamily had a book about fighting -which is really a book about how to better communicate with your partner - I knew I wanted to read it!

One chapter in and I asked my husband if he would read it with me. We have both read and discussed the first two chapters. I took notes and he made a “cheat sheet” to help us remember some of their tips for communicating what you want and need from your partner.

What is your fighting style? Do you yell and scream? Or do you get quiet and leave? Do you and your partner know each other’s triggers and avoid them?

Raise your hand if you're a Chip & Jo fan or a fan of the Magnolia brand! ⁣
⁣
I definitely am. I've watched Fixer Upper, visited the Silos and shop the Magnolia brand at Target. ⁣
⁣
When we visited the Silos last year, I noticed there was a whole store dedicated to Chip's recommendations and favorites and his book was featured. I knew I'd want to read it sometime, so was delighted when @tlcbooktours reached out with a chance.⁣
⁣
In this book, Chips shares about how networks are essential for building anything - and by networks, we mean your own home team or community. Chip & Jo have been successfully flipping houses for years, hosting a TV show and creating products, but when they went to build their own tv network, they realized it would not come easy. ⁣
⁣
According to Chip, if you want a network that will pull you into a life of meaning, a life of joy and connection, you need to be intentional about choosing the people in it. People who are enlivened and electrified by the power of living according to their purpose, who are always in pursuit of lifelong learning, and who have a sincere belief that relationships are more than transactions. Chip Gaines has been building that kind of network his whole life, and he can tell you, it doesn’t come easy.⁣
⁣
To say it requires sweat equity would be an understatement. It requires faith in people. It requires hope. And it requires a willingness to grow even when it hurts. From hard-won lessons and personal stories from Chip, No Pain, No Gaines is a by-the-bootstraps manual for building a network you can count on.⁣

This immersive dive into the life and work of Salvador Dalí unlocks the secret of this creative genius and reveals for the first time how his erotically charged paintings changed the world of modern art.⁣

In this stunning volume, rich with more than 150 full-color images, noted art historians Jean-Pierre Isbouts and Christopher Heath Brown discuss the historical, social, and political conditions that shaped Dalí’s work, identify the impact of Modern as well as Old Master art, and present an unflinching view of the master’s personal relationships and motivations. With their deeply compelling narrative, Isbouts and Brown uncover how Dalí’s visual wit and enduring cult of personality still impacts fashion, literature, and art, from Andy Warhol to Lady Gaga, and seeks to answer why, in an age of shock and awe, Dalí’s art still manages to distress, perplex, and entertain.⁣

This book was raw and real. Stewart crafted beautifully imperfect characters that allow us to see ourselves in their struggles.

Even the most put-together family, like the Flynn’s, can have a hidden secret!

This story follows Maggie as she navigates life after her husband’s death, and the life she experiences with her two best friends and her two daughters.

I spent the majority of the novel on the edge of my chair cheering for Maggie and her daughters.

This book also gives off what I’d consider Virgin River vibes, so if you like that series, grab this one and give it a try. I really need another book to come along and tell me what happens with the rest of their story!

There are several trigger warnings, so if you’re concerned, my DMs are always open and I will be honest before you jump into this one!

Thank you @mariah_stewart_books and @tlcbooktours for my #gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.

This book would make a lovely gift for a special religious occasion or for your own home library. Lots of books come into our home, and this is the first one my Pa took from the pile and placed in our living room. When I saw it there, he made a point to tell me not to give it away (he knows I’m generous with the amount of books I receive) and that it was stunning. If that isn’t a recommendation, I don’t know what is! It really is lovely and one I look forward to referencing often.⁣
⁣
Do you have a favorite religious tradition or story in your family? As much as I love Christmas, Easter and Resurrection Sunday is so special to me! I’m looking forward to it.⁣

Anyone who knows me knows I’ve seen almost every season of the bachelor. Ben Higgins was one of my favorite bachelors because of his kind nature and attitude! I also thought he had a really great group of women in his season. ⁣
⁣
Ben took his fame in another direction after the Bachelor. He felt that not many people knew the true Ben even though he put himself out there on the show. He threw himself into his charities, Generous Coffee and Humanity and Hope United. This book is a little more religious that I would have liked, but Ben turned to religion to help him find himself after the show aired. This definitely isn’t a Bachelor confession book, but it’s still very interesting to see what he’s done since the show.⁣
⁣
Thank you so much for my copy of Ben’s book to @tlctours and @thomasnelson. This book is on sale now!⁣

Many thanks @tlcbooktours⁣
& @williammorrowbooks for my copy!⁣
⁣
In this true love story that defies all odds, Josefine Lobnik, a Yugoslav partisan heroine, and Bruce Murray, a New Zealand soldier, discover love in the midst of a brutal war.⁣
⁣
In the heart of Nazi-occupied Europe, two people meet fleetingly in a chance encounter. One an underground resistance fighter, a bold young woman determined to vanquish the enemy occupiers; the other a prisoner of war, a man longing to escape the confines of the camp so he can battle again. A crumpled note passes between these two strangers, slipped through the wire of the compound, and sets them on a course that will change their lives forever.⁣
⁣
Woven through their tales of great bravery, daring escapes, betrayal, torture, and retaliation is their remarkable love story that survived against all odds. This is an extraordinary account of two ordinary people who found love during the unimaginable hardships of Hitler’s barbaric regime as told by their son-in-law Doug Gold, who decided to tell their story from the moment he heard about their remarkable tale of bravery, resilience, and resistance.⁣

✨ Happy Pub Day ✨

One of my biggest goals for 2021 is the highlight queer stories, and I’m so fortunate to have been given the opportunity to receive an early copy of I’M IN SEATTLE, WHERE ARE YOU? by Mortada Gzar. Just reading the synopsis, it already has me ready to bawl. 😭 I’m definitely going to be picking up this story for my April TBR—let me know if you plan to read it or if you have any other queer memoirs to send my way!

SYNOPSIS

An award-winning Iraqi writer creates a new world for himself in Seattle in search of lost love.
As the US occupation of Iraq rages, novelist Mortada Gzar, a student at the University of Baghdad, has a chance encounter with Morise, an African American soldier. It’s love at first sight, a threat to them both, and a moment of self-discovery. Challenged by society’s rejection and Morise’s return to the US, Mortada takes to the page to understand himself.
In his deeply affecting memoir, Mortada interweaves tales of his childhood work as a scrap-metal collector in a war zone and the indignities faced by openly gay artists in Iraq with his impossible love story and journey to the US. Marginalized by his own society, he is surprised to discover the racism he finds in a new one. At its heart, I’m in Seattle, Where Are You? is a moving tale of love and resilience.

🍀HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!!🍀⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Happy Wednesday everyone! Today I'm happy to be participating in the @TLCBookTours book for for The Windsor knot by S.J. Bennett. Thank you to @WilliamMorrowBooks and @HarperAudio for the complimentary copies of this title.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
One sentence review: A classic mystery with Queen Elizabeth as the lead sleuth - what's not to love?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I've always been a fan of a good mystery. So when I read the synopsis of this one and saw that Queen Elizabeth is the protagonist, I knew this was a book I needed to read. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The book is set in 2016 before the Queen's 90th birthday celebration. A guest at Windsor Castle, a young Russian pianist, is found strangled. As MI5 gets involved, the Queen finds herself increasingly frustrated with the direction the investigation is going in. And so the fun begins.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For me this book delivered everything I wanted: respectful behind the scenes fiction on what life as the Queen might look like, interesting characters, and most importantly an interesting mystery that kept me guessing.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I recommend this book for people who love a classic mystery or who love everything royal. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I was also lucky enough to get an alc for this book. I thought the narration was done really well. There are a lot of characters but the narrator did a good job in keeping them distinct so there wasn't a lot of confusion.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This book is available now!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is Book 4 of #BGBReviewMadness with @bookgoalbusters !⁣⁣
⁣⁣
QOTD: How do you feel about fiction that involves real life, living characters?⁣⁣
AOTD: I'm okay with it as long as they don't delve too deeply into historic events where it sort of muddles real history with fiction.⁣⁣

Happy Hump Day! Who remembers telephones when they looked like this? 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙊𝙋𝙀𝙍𝘼𝙏𝙊𝙍 by Gretchen Berg is set in a small Midwestern town in the early 1950s, about a nosy switchboard operator who overhears gossip involving her own family, and the unraveling that discovery sets into motion. Thank you to @williammorrowbooks @gretchenbergbooks and @tlcbooktours for my gifted copy.⁣

𝘐𝘯 𝘢 𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘰𝘸𝘯, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦’𝘴 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 . . .⁣
⁣
Nobody knows the people of Wooster, Ohio, better than switchboard operator Vivian Dalton, and she’d be the first to tell you that. She calls it intuition. Her teenage daughter, Charlotte, calls it eavesdropping. Vivian and the other women who work at Bell on East Liberty Street connect lines and lives. They aren’t supposed to listen in on conversations, but they do, and they all have opinions on what they hear—especially Vivian.⁣
⁣
One night, Vivian listens in on a call between that snob Betty Miller and someone whose voice she can’t quite place and hears something shocking. Betty Miller’s mystery friend has news that, if true, will shatter Vivian’s tidy life in Wooster, humiliating her and making her the laughingstock of the town. Vivian may be mortified, but she isn’t going to take this lying down. She’s going to get to the bottom of that rumor because she wants the truth, no matter how painful it may be.⁣
⁣
But as Vivian is about to be reminded, in a small town like Wooster, one secret usually leads to another. . . .⁣
⁣
❓ If you could listen in on a phone conversation about yourself, would you?
