Laura Foley, author of Night Ringing, on tour September 2016

July 22, 2016 By TLC Booktours Leave a Comment

Night RingingAbout Night Ringing

Paperback: 108 pages

Publisher: Headmistress Press (January 11, 2016)

“I revel in the genius of simplicity” Laura Foley writes as she gives us in plain-spoken but deeply lyrical moments, poems that explore a life filled with twists and turns and with many transformations. Through it all is a search for a fulfilling personal and sexual identity, a way to be most fully alive in the world. From multicultural love affairs through marriage with a much older man, through raising a family, through grief, to lesbian love affairs, Night Ringing is the portrait of a woman willing to take risks to find her own best way. And she does this with grace and wisdom. As she says: “All my life I’ve been swimming, not drowning.”

I love the words and white space of poetry. I love stories even more. In this collection, Laura Foley evokes stories of crystallized moments, of quiet and overpowering emotion, of bathtubs and lemon chicken. The author grows up on the pages, comes of age, and reconciles past with present. Almost. Try to put the book down between poems to savor each experience. Try, but it won’t be easy.—Joni B. Cole, author of Toxic Feedback, Helping Writers Survive and Thrive

Plain-spoken and spare, Laura Foley’s poems in Night Ringing trace a life story through a series of brief scenes: separate, intense moments of perception, in which the speaker’s focus is arrested, when a moment opens to reveal a glimpse of the larger whole. Memories of a powerful, enigmatic father, a loving but elusive mother, a much older husband, thread Foley’s stories of childhood, marriage and motherhood, finally yielding to the pressure of her attention, as she constructs a series of escapes from family expectations, and moves toward a new life. In these lucid, intense poems, Foley’s quiet gaze, her concentration, and emotional accuracy of detail, render this collection real as rain.—Cynthia Huntington, author of Heavenly Bodies

Foley’s voice rings with quiet authority undercut by calamity, examining a life so extraordinary, she seems to have lived several people’s lives, setting a high bar for poetic craft she meets, in great mystery perfectly expressed in the tiny, quotidian, “spent matches pressed on wet pavement,” to soulful beauty, “as wind lifts/every shining wave”; in wisdom rooted in humor, from the deliciously funny “Flunking Jung,” to self-deprecating wit, misreading “poetic” as “pathetic,” reminding us wisdom is love, grown from self-compassion.—April Ossmann, author of Anxious Music

@tlcbooktours is celebrating the tour for A CHILD LOST by @michellecoxwrites with a giveaway for a $100 Amazon gift card! Head over to @tlcbooktours for details.

A CHILD LOST is the latest in the Henrietta and Inspector Howard series. You can even listen to the whole series on audio! Use the link for @librofm in today’s story to get the first book free!

I admit this is my first Michelle Cox book, but it definitely won’t be the last! This is actually the FIFTH book that features the power duo of Henrietta Von Harmon and Inspector Clive Howard, but it read well as a stand alone.

All of these books are historical mysteries set in 1930’s Chicago. In this story, Henrietta is suffering from depression after a recent miscarriage. Clive takes on a new case hoping to boost the baby blues for Henrietta. Meanwhile Henrietta’s sister has asked her to help her beau in a missing persons case. Both cases are more than they bargained for and weave together the mystery of a spiritualist, an insane asylum, and a lost girl.

The writing style fully immerses you in the story! It is incredibly detailed, full of classic twists and turns, and the historical elements are well researched. The Mundelein Seminary, Bohemian Home for Orphans and Dunning Asylum (also called the Tomb for the Living) are all real places. The story exposes the horrific range of treatment back then for patients dealing with mental illness and the system so rife with abuse.

I devoured this book in one sitting! It is a truly entertaining and suspenseful page turner. I think fans of both mystery and historical fiction will enjoy the story. It does make me want to go back and read her earlier books to fully appreciate how Henrietta and Clives relationship has grown.

Don’t forget to head to @tlcbooktours for the Amazon Gift Card giveaway!

CW: miscarriage , depression, mental health, missing child, and domestic violence.

Today is my tour stop with @tlcbooktours @harperviabooks @allendeisabel for Maya’s Notebook and Ripper

MAYA’S NOTEBOOK

Nineteen-year-old Maya Vidal grew up in a rambling old house in Berkeley with her grandmother Nini—a force of nature whose formidable strength helped her build a new life after she emigrated from Chile in 1973—and Popo, an African-American astronomer and professor whose solid, comforting presence helps calm the turbulence of Maya’s adolescence.
When Popo dies of cancer, Maya comes undone and turns to drugs, alcohol, and petty crime. When she becomes lost in the dangerous underworld of Las Vegas, Maya becomes caught in the crosshairs of deadly warring forces. Her one chance for survival is Nini, who helps her escape to a remote island off the coast of Chile. Here, Maya tries to make sense of the past to discover the truth about her life and her family, and embarks on her greatest adventure: a journey of self-discovery and forgiveness.

RIPPER

Though they are as different as night and day, Indiana and Amanda Jackson have always shared a strong, mother-daughter bond. Beautiful and free-spirited, Indiana is a holistic healer. Teenage Amanda is a natural sleuth fascinated by the dark side of human nature like her father, the SFPD’s deputy chief of homicide. She also loves playing Ripper, an online mystery game.
When a serial killer strikes San Francisco, the young amateur detective plunges into her own investigation. But the case becomes all too personal when Indiana vanishes. Could her mother’s disappearance be linked to the murders? With Indiana’s life on the line, Amanda must solve this perplexing mystery . . . before it’s too late.

I am back!!! It’s 2021 and I thought hard about how I’d return to bookstagram, and it hit me. Rather than pick a new book, why not celebrate the paperback release of one of my FAVORITE books I read in 2020???

If you haven’t had a chance to read THE HOLLOWS by Jess Montgomery yet, now is a perfect time to start because it’s new in paperback! You can also find some giveaways if you head over to @tlcbooktours page 💕 Let’s ring in 2021 with books that will whisk you away into a fascinating mystery!

ABOUT THE BOOK: Ohio, 1926: For many years, the railroad track in Moonvale Tunnel has been used as a shortcut through the Appalachian hills. When an elderly woman is killed walking along the tracks, the brakeman tells tales of seeing a ghostly female figure dressed all in white.

Newly elected Sheriff Lily Ross is called on to the case to dispel the myths. With the help of her friends Marvena Whitcomb and Hildy Cooper, Lily follows the woman’s trail to The Hollows—a notorious asylum—and they begin to expose dark secrets long-hidden by time and the mountains.

American socialite Lily Durham is known for enjoying one moment to the next, with little regard for the consequences of her actions. But just as she is banished overseas to England as a “cure” for her frivolous ways, the Great War breaks out and wreaks havoc. She joins her cousin in nursing the wounded at a convalescent home deep in the wilds of Scotland at a crumbling castle where its laird is less than welcoming. Alec MacGregor has given his entire life to preserving his home of Kinclavoch Castle, but mounting debts force him to sell off his family history bit by bit. Labeled a coward for not joining his countrymen in the trenches due to an old injury, he opens his home to the Tommies to make recompense while he keeps to the shadows. But his preference for the shadows is shattered when a new American nurse comes streaming into the castle on a burst of light. Lily and Alec are thrown together when a series of mysterious events threatens to ruin the future of Kinclavoch. Can they put aside their differences to find the culprit before it’s too late, or will their greatest distraction be falling in love? (Goodreads Synopsis)

So my go to historical fiction has always been WWII, but I have become so much more interested in The Great War recently. There aren’t as many books about that time frame, and I want to learn more! So when I find a book about that time I jump on it! I cannot wait to start reading this one!

Thank you to @tlcbooktours for my gifted copy of this book!

When Tara Peary’s twin sister Sophie goes missing, Tara dives into New York’s underbelly to find her. Sophie is the one person who’s ever truly understood her, and Tara knows her sister isn’t the only one who needs help.

Tara is also on the run emotionally from her complicated childhood. Her memories are threatening to overwhelm her emotions and derail the hunt for Sophie. A psychotherapist keeps her afloat, but when Tara begins dating her therapist’s young tech-millionaire neighbor, she risks losing the only lifelines she has left.

The more Tara uncovers about her sister’s disappearance and the dark side of the rich elite, the less certain of the truth she becomes. As Tara reaches the center of the mystery, spanning from her childhood home in Georgia to a Southern California beach, she has to decide whether the truth is a price she’s willing to pay.

Book Feature!

2021 is the year I work on spirituality and spiritual growth- so when @tlcbooktours reached out about this book- I knew it was a perfect place to start!

Synopsis: “When I Am Second launched in 2008, the organization intended simply to tell stories of lives changed utterly by people placing God first and themselves second. Although the organization has exploded in size and influence since, that original mission has remained the same–and continues to have enormous power and influence today. Moving, compelling, and profoundly inspiring, the stories found here remind us that our hearts will always be restless until they find their rest in God and always unsatisfied until we find the love of God.”

This book reminds me of the chicken soup for the soul books I used to read as a teenager- and cannot wait to read and discuss this! Pub day is tomorrow so be on the lookout for this beauty!

What are some of your 2021 goals?

Book description:⁣
The streets of London are paved with gold ...allegedly. They may be twin sisters, but Lizzie and Penny Berry are complete opposites - Penny is blonde, thin and outrageous; Lizzie quiet, thoughtful and definitely not thin. The one trait they do share is a desire to DO something with their lives, and as far as they are concerned, the place to get noticed is London. Out of the blue they discover they have a grandmother living in Chelsea - and when she has to go into hospital, they find themselves flat-sitting on the King's Road. But, as they discover, it's not as easy to become It Girls as they'd imagined, and west end boys aren't at all like Hugh Grant ...⁣

Scotland Yard detective Ian Rutledge is assigned one of the most baffling investigations of his career—a cold murder case with an unidentified victim and a cold trail with few clues to follow.⁣
⁣
Chief Inspector Brian Leslie, a respected colleague of Ian Rutledge’s, is sent to Avebury, a village set inside a great prehistoric stone circle not far from Stonehenge.⁣
⁣
A young woman has been murdered next to a mysterious, hooded, figure-like stone, but no one recognizes her—or admits to it. And how did she get there? Despite a thorough investigation, it appears that her killer has simply vanished.⁣
⁣
Rutledge, returning from the conclusion of a case involving another apparently unknown woman, is asked to take a second look at Leslie’s inquiry, to see if he can identify this victim. But Rutledge is convinced Chief Superintendent Jameson only hopes to tarnish his earlier success once he also fails.⁣
⁣
Where to begin? He too finds very little to go on in Avebury, slowly widening his search beyond the village—only to discover that unlikely—possibly even unreliable—clues are pointing him toward an impossible solution, one that will draw the wrath of the Yard down on him, and very likely see him dismissed if he pursues it. But what about the victim—what does he owe this tragic woman? Where must his loyalty lie?⁣

As a parent, this year has been more challenging. While I've loved having more time with my two little boys, the line between parent and educator has definitely blurred, and while I wish I could say that I've always been patient, empathetic, and understanding during this year's more stressful and taxing times, as a mom and human, I'm most definitely flawed, always learning, and perpetually a work in progress. And that's where this book has been so helpful!⁣

This book is "for the busiest parents, caregivers and educators. It provides tips, recommendations, online resources, and activities that are fun and engaging and take just about ten to twenty minutes," and it's written in an engaging and accessible way. From talking about being a good role model and the importance of being present and spending quality time with your child, to teaching the importance of standing up for yourself, active listening, and self-compassion, this book is a treasure trove of information that everyone can use at a time when empathy is so important and needed.⁣

Ya’ll know that I love a good cozy mystery every now and then, but what you don’t know is that that love started with @elleryadams! The first cozy mystery I ever read was her novel The Secret, Book, & Scone Society (Book 1 in the Secret, Book, & Scone Society series)! Which is why I’m so excited to be featuring The Book of Candlelight today, Book 3 in that same series!
.
If you’re looking to try out a cozy mystery for the first time or already have a bunch of cozies under your reading belt, make sure you check out this series!
.
Sʏɴᴏᴘsɪs:
In the new Secret, Book, and Scone Society novel from New York Times bestselling author Ellery Adams, the rain in Miracle Springs, North Carolina, has been relentless—and a flood of trouble is about to be unleashed . . .

As the owner of Miracle Books, Nora Pennington figures all the wet weather this spring is at least good for business. The local inns are packed with stranded travelers, and among them Nora finds both new customers and a new friend, the sixtysomething Sheldon, who starts helping out at the store.

Since a little rain never hurt anyone, Nora rides her bike over to the flea market one sodden day and buys a bowl from Danny, a Cherokee potter. It’ll make a great present for Nora’s EMT boyfriend, but the next day, a little rain turns into a lot of rain, and the Miracle River overflows it banks. Amid the wreckage of a collapsed footbridge, Danny's body lies within the churning water.

Nora and the sheriff both doubt the ruling of accidental drowning, and Nora decides it’s time for the Secret, Book, and Scone Society to spring into action. When another body turns up, it becomes clearer that Danny’s death can’t be blamed on a natural disaster. A crucial clue may lie within the stone walls of the Inn of Mist and Roses: a diary, over a century old and spattered with candle wax, that leads Nora and her friends through a maze of intrigue—and onto the trail of a murderer . . .

I read The Widows, the book that precedes The Hollows, in November and immediately fell in love with Lily and Marvena, the feisty, strong women who are the main characters in the novel. I enjoyed The Hollows even more than the first book. It’s an historical mystery set in Appalachian Ohio in the 1920s. After her husband’s death, Lily took over as the local sheriff and had a mystery to solve, creating an unlikely friendship between her and Marvena. Now that some time has passed, it’s time for Lily to run for re-election as sheriff and not everyone has appreciated a woman in the job. At the same time, a mysterious death is keeping Lily busy.
These characters are so well written and I enjoyed both books so much. The paperback edition of The Hollows comes out January 12.

𝕊𝕪𝕟𝕠𝕡𝕤𝕚𝕤: When Tara Peary’s twin sister Sophie goes missing, Tara dives into New York’s underbelly to find her.

Check this one out: Italian Setting + Headstrong Girl + Book Lover … doesn’t that sound like the perfect recipe for a story?⁣
⁣
In old Bari, everyone knows Maria De Santis as “Malacarne,” the bad seed. Nicknamed for her dark features, volcanic temperament, and resistance to rules, the headstrong girl can only imagine the possibilities that lie outside her poverty-stricken neighborhood.⁣⁣
⁣
As she reconciles her need for escape with the allegiance she feels toward her family, Maria has her salvations: her secret friend, Michele, son of a rival family and every bit the outsider she is, and her passion for books, which may someday take her far, far away.⁣⁣
⁣
A captivating family saga focused on a willful young woman’s struggles against her oppressive small town.⁣
⁣
Thanks to @amazonpublishing and @tlcbooktours for the gifted book.⁣
